Thunderstorms developing over lakes may drift into Carson City region this afternoon

Thunderstorms have begun to develop today around the Sierra that may head into the Carson City and Carson Valley areas by this afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Special Weather Statement.

Holy convergence at Railroad Museum: Nevada restored, Vatican approved

Sunday mornings at the Nevada State Railroad Museum can be very, very special. On this Sunday morning we find three steam locomotives - the narrow gauge Glenbrook unveiled Saturday, circa 1875, the standard gauge Inyo, also circa, 1875, and the standard gauge V&T No. 25, circa 1905 converging at the Diamond and blessed by Father Joe from the Vatican.

Chamber of Commerce unveils local artist, St. Clair's metal sculpture

A local metal artist, Robbie St. Clair unveiled his six-foot metal sculpture of two mustangs rearing. The Carson City Chamber commissioned St. Clair to create the piece of uniquely Nevada art.

Continuing in the vein of placing public art in public places such as that placed along the I-580 corridor as part of the freeway construction, St. Clair’s mustang sculpture was unveiled and dedicated Saturday.
St. Clair began to pursue metal 10 years ago when he found himself wanting to create art that was tangible. He began to construct signs and started taking art classes.

Restored to its breathtaking beauty, steam locomotive Glenbrook is unveiled

Train buffs and dignitaries gathered at the Nevada Rail Road Museum under rainy skies, Saturday for the unveiling of the Glenbrook, a historic locomotive that once hauled lumber from Lake Tahoe sawmills to Spooner Summit.

“Nowhere else can you see an event like this,” said Peter Barton, Administrator of the Division of Museums and History. “We’ve done research before we started restoring, we spent months with historians and researchers. The locomotive has been painstakingly restored, no where else can you find a locomotive that has had so much time spent working on it.”

It’s a Railroad kind of weekend in Carson City. The historic 1885 Glenbrook Steam Engine will be on display Saturday, all steamed up with the Inyo at the Nevada Railroad Museum. You will want to arrive before the dedication ceremony at 11 a.m. to get the best photos. The V and T Steam Engine #25 will be running all weekend if you want to take a ride. It’s also opening weekend for the Virginia and Truckee that departs from the Eastgate Depot for Virginia City. Roundtrips sell out fast, so make sure to get a reservation if you want to go.

Tahoe Home Featured on May 27 HGTV House Hunters program

Fans of HGTV’s House Hunters may see some familiar scenery on the May 27 episode, which features a Bay Area couple’s search for the perfect mountain home.

Travis and Morgan Fields of Oakland were working with Chase International’s Angie Clark last spring when they decided to invite the show to follow them on their quest. HGTV producers and a film crew came out to Tahoe to film the couple on their South Lake Tahoe search. The episode, titled“Looking for a Log Cabin Vacation Home in Lake Tahoe” will air Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. It will air again through the weekend.

By 1943, it was saved from scrap and donated by the Bliss Family to the Nevada State Museum, where it pleased countless youngsters who crawled all over it outside the museum’s doors on Carson Street for four decades. Restored by the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it is under steam again.

Howard Hughes’ former Lake Tahoe estate found its way back to the spotlight recently when it was selected as a winner in HGTV’s 2014 Doory Awards. The quaint-yet-majestic cabin, listed by Chase International’s Karen Bruno, received the most online votes in the Celebrity Homes category. The month-long contest on HGTV’s FrontDoor.com attracted nearly 50 million views.

Chase International Names Agents of the Year

Chase International recently recognized its top 2014 agents, with Alison Elder being named agent of the year for the Lake Tahoe area and Tina and Terri Ross honored as agents of the year in Reno.

Lake Tahoe’s top rookie was Mary Kleingartner with $4.2 million in volume sold. Brent Johnson was named top sales agent, with 42.75 units sold. Elder also claimed top listing agent in units, volume, and units and volume sold, as well as top sales agent. She helped broker more than $65 million in sales.

Carson City man dies in crash on Highway 50 near Lake Tahoe

A Carson City man, Joseph David Winters, died early Wednesday morning in a single vehicle accident on Highway 50 south of Glenbrook near Lake Tahoe, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

NHP Troopers were dispatched at 2:10 a.m. to a single vehicle rollover accident near mile marker 3 in Douglas County just south of Glenbrook, said NHP Trooper David Gibson. The crash investigation details indicate a maroon 2001 Jeep Wrangler driven by Winters, 27, of Carson City was traveling eastbound on Highway 50 in the right travel lane approaching mile marker 3 in Douglas County.

Prescribed fires for Lake Tahoe, Spooner areas begin Monday

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, the Nevada Division of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations beginning Monday, Jan. 12.

Carson City weekend arrests include DUIs, domestic battery and bench warrants

A 21-year-old Carson City man was arrested Sunday, 2:21 a.m. in the area of North Plaza and East Caroline streets on misdemeanor charges of being an intoxicated pedestrian, obstructing an officer and resisting arrest with violence, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the 500 block of North Carson Street for a vehicle accident in a parking lot. Dispatch alerted officers that the subjects involved in the accident were confrontational and getting violent with casino security.

Prescribed fire operations near Sugar Pine Point State Park, Pioneer Trail and Washoan Boulevard, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass, Spooner Summit, and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park in Slaughterhouse Canyon, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team announced Friday.

A new South Lake Tahoe couple brought along a little something special on their recent home search — a camera crew, an HGTV House Hunters crew, to be exact.

Intoxicated driver parked in middle of road mistakenly thinks he’s at the Bunny Ranch

A Carson City man was arrested earlier this week after officers found his vehicle stopped in the middle of the roadway, with the intoxicated driver insisting that he was parked at a brothel, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The 41-year-old man was arrested Monday, Oct. 20, 11:43 p.m. in the area of Imperial and Applegate on a misdemeanor charge, suspicion of DUI first offense.

Reno real estate sales climb in third quarter

The Reno-area real estate market continues to rebound in the third quarter, with a 9 percent rise in sales volume and 14 percent jump in median home price, according to a Lake Tahoe-based real estate firm.

Home prices in Carson Valley were up, with a 10 percent jump in median price ($275,500) and six percent rise in average price ($315,115). Sales volume, however, was down three percent and units sold was down eight percent.

Lake Tahoe home sales down, but prices remain steady from January to June

Home sales throughout Lake Tahoe continued to slow throughout the first half of the year, while home prices remained steady, according to a quarterly report released by Lake Tahoe-based real estate company Chase International. Despite an 18 percent decline in overall sales volume, the figures are still significantly higher than those of 2012.

Nevada railroad museum in Carson City celebrates a July 4 weekend of trains

With all the flavorings of the Old West, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will showcase several of its trains for the July 4 weekend.

It's living history on the rails when steam locomotives V&T No. 25 and the famous Inyo will operate along with the historic, self-propelled McKeen motor car Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rides will be available behind the 25 and on the McKeen car every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
