CARSON CITY — Fourth of July week means history comes to life at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in the capital city.

Today we honor those who have not only served, but who gave all in defense of our country. A tribute ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery for our Nevadan veterans will begin at 1 p.m. A memorial for our Native American veterans begins at 10 a.m. at the cemetery across the street from the Stewart Indian School. The 10th annual barbecue at Evergreen Gene’s welcomes all comers, and veterans will get 25 percent any of the fun things they find in the shop. Read on below for more happenings today.

Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the kick-off to summer, but in Northern Nevada we know that the weather is a fickle creature. The weather should be dryer and warmer as the weekend progresses but have back-up plans for your bar-be-que, just in case. From the Downtown Carson City Ghost Walk to the Rockin’ Rib Fest at Casino Fandango, a day hike with Muscle Powered to the Spring Blinky Man night-time costumed bike pub crawl – this weekend is chock-full of fun for locals and visitors alike, for the young and young-at-heart.

STATELINE — U.S. President Donald Trump has appointed A.J. “Bud” Hicks to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board. Hicks, a resident of Reno since 1957, will assume the non-voting, presidential-appointee seat on the Governing Board held by Tim Carlson since 2012.

Strong thunderstorms have moved into the Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County areas, bringing periods of heavy rain, lightning, hail and ponding water, according to the National Weather Service.

CARSON CITY — Beginning Monday, May 7, single lane closures will be in place on U.S. 50 near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe as the Nevada Department of Transportation completes roadside slope repairs.

Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Wednesday afternoon to a barbecue fire that began to spread and was thought to threatened a nearby structure in area of Harbin and Musser streets.

A 22-year-old woman was arrested early Monday morning for a felony fugitive from justice warrant, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Sunday offers some great options for a variety of interests. Learn about the Nevada State Children’s Home during the 1940s and 50s at a presentation hosted by the Carson City Historical Society. A free concert offered by the Capital City Community Band is perfect for all ages, and your donations will help the all-volunteer troupe cover the costs of their many free events throughout the year.

Sunny days in the fifties are okay for spring, but we still need some winter to come our way. Take advantage of the warmer weather during a Winter Hike along Carson Valley’s Pinion Trail with Muscle Powered. Song and dance kids will want to audition for the upcoming performance of ‘Willy Wonka, Jr.’ If you’re a fan of song, but possibly too old to join the Youth Theater Carson City cast, check out the monthly jam in Silver City at their historic School House. All instruments are welcome, in addition to vocalists and those who just want to listen.

The top 10 destinations in state, based on guest arrivals and earnings were headed by Stateline with 24,000 guest arrivals, followed by Incline Village, Reno, Carson City, Zephyr Cove, and Glenbrook. Overall, the entire state brought in 600,000 guest arrivals taking $80 million in revenue in 2017.

The Nevada Department of Transportation has wrapped up this season’s construction to reinforce a destabilized roadside slope on U.S. Highway 50 near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe. Final construction will resume in the spring.

CARSON CITY — October means the harvest moon and at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, it means the Harvest Train. The museum is hosting its third annual Harvest Train over two weekends in October, with steam train rides, a pumpkin patch, craft fair and food trucks.

UPDATE 10:50AM: Power has been mostly restored to areas around Carson Valley in Douglas County. There are around 98 customers without power in the Buckeye Road, East Valley Road areas. NV Energy says power should be restored by 11 a.m.

Steven Drew will lecture on the railroads of Lake Tahoe at the Nevada State Museum tonight. Get in the Street Vibrations mood at Battle Born Harley. A concert featuring Justin Lee, in addition to bikes and brews, will kick off their celebration. Families will want to attend the outdoor movie in McFadden Plaza.

UPDATE 5:47PM: Much of the localized flooding from the heavy rain has subsided. Winds are calm with a few lighting strikes still happening. There are no longer any severe weather warnings for Carson City.

UPDATE 5:15PM: The Tornado Warning has expired. Flooding throughout Carson City is being reported as rush hours begins. William Street from Mills Park, College Parkway, Roop Street, and Saliman all experiencing flooding issues. Much of the heavy rain has now moved on though there are several lightning strikes still around Carson City.

The Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City are teaming up for a day of history about one of the state’s most beloved artifacts and the rail line on which it operated.

Labor Day commemorates the men and women whose sweat made this such a great country and has been a national holiday since 1894. Celebrate this unofficial end-of-summer with a trip to the lake, a backyard bar-be-que, the parade in Virginia City, or one of the many fun events going on around town. Head over to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for their annual Inter-faith Potluck Picnic and don’t forget to bring some silverware and something yummy to share.

MONDAY: Labor Day

The great thing about Labor Day weekend is that it just keeps going. The Best in the West Rib Cook-off offers up family fun, live music, and plenty of bar-be-qued delights all the way through Monday. For those with younger kids, consider a day at Mills Park. This is the last weekend for summertime train rides through the cottonwoods. Join Muscle Powered at Silver Saddle Ranch by the Carson River for a bike or hike this morning. Bring water and a camera, you never know what wildlife will make an appearance.

Summer is holding on for dear life, and sending a miniature heat wave our way for this long weekend. For those of you not in Black Rock City, the Carson City region offers plenty of recreation and entertainment. Downtown will be hopping with the Farmers Market, monthly Wine Walk, and this season’s last outdoor concert at the Brewery Arts Center – and that’s just Saturday! A fire at an NV Energy south shore Lake Tahoe power plant knocked out electricity to thousands Monday morning from Tahoe to Carson Valley, and a small portion of Carson City.

Let us celebrate our great country today with family, friends, and neighbors. You’ll find fireworks displays in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and both the North and South shores of Lake Tahoe.

It may just be the third of July, but our country’s birthday celebrations have already started. You’ll find the annual RSVP Carnival at Mills Park with games, rides, cotton candy, and hours of skateboarding feats of daring-do. It’s an old-fashioned Fourth of July Party at the Senior Center in Dayton, complete with a show-n-shine and yummy bar-be-que. Head up to Kings Beach in Lake Tahoe for the early-bird fireworks show and beach bash.

Let the good times roll. Head over to Mills Park in Carson City for the annual RSVP Carnival and catch some high-flying skate-boarding action. You’ll find the historic Wungnema House open for tours at the very east end of the park. One price gets you unlimited rides at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, and plenty of photo opportunities with their historic steamer. UPDATE 4:40AM: Power has been restored to much of the affected outage areas in Minden/Gardnerville and Glenbrook as of 4:30 a.m., according to NV Energy.
