The weekend is here and your Saturday around Carson City is chockfull of activities.

Despite snow on the ground, a Chinese New Year celebration will take place in downtown Carson City between the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada.

The ninth annual Carson High School Safe Grad Safe and Sober Run/Walk occurs at the CHS track.

And the 20th annual Feast of Chocolate, a scholarship fundraiser for the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Capital Branch, is being held at the Plaza Hotel Event Center.

December 21 is the Silver Stage Food Pantry’s fifth annual “Shopping with the Elves” event. From 1-5 p.m., parents who are guests of the Food Pantry can shop for gifts for their children.

The event includes a chance for children to visit with Santa and have holiday refreshments while their parents shop. The Pantry is in need of gifts for ages infant to 18 years.

Home-bound Seniors: The Pantry also welcomes donations of gifts for seniors. They deliver baskets and gifts to 40 home-bound elders, and sing carols to them as well.

Santa will be making an appearance with a music-filled parade through downtown Carson City this Saturday, Dec. 8. Children, veterans, and community members are welcomed to join in the parade to help escort Santa through the town.

Good day Carson City, it is Thursday, Nov. 29, 2018. With steady rain in the city early this morning, slushy snow in the foothills and heavy snow in the Sierra, we are on our way to winter even though it is still technically fall. It sure is beginning to look like Christmas, especially as we head into the weekend, with Friday's Silver and SnowFlakes Festival of Lights at the capitol and Saturday's downtown Holiday Crawl.

DAYTON, Nev. — Healthy Communities Coalition’s garden center, floral and gift shop, Community Roots & Shoots, hosts its annual Holiday Open House with music, festive appetizers and lots of community spirit on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Today's column features good news and bad news. The bad news is Labor Day is now behind us and we must re-adjust to a regular two-day weekend again. But therein lies the good news. Another weekend has arrived, and you'll find plenty of ways to enjoy your time off.

Just because Summer is coming to an end, doesn't mean the gardening season is! Greenhouse Garden Center is hosting a workshop led by David Ruf at 11:00 am, Saturday Sept. 8, which will go over teaching the ways of Autumn Container Planting, including flowers that bloom in the fall such as mums, pansies, and more.

More than 40 craftsmen and artisans joined together in the heat during Greenhouse Garden Center's 15th annual "Art at the Greenhouse" event on Saturday, part of the Jazz and Beyond Music and Art Festival continuing in Carson City.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. Read on and you’ll find indoors and outdoors activities that will help alleviate the cabin fever.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Bring your own vase and create beautiful floral arrangements with wildflowers you’ve collected, or flowers from your own garden, with expert tips from Floral Designer Lynnette Edmondson. No flowers? Lynnette can bring some for you.

The Dayton Farmers Market has opened for the 2018 summer season. The market takes place every Saturday through September from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

It’s going to be a chili weekend, and that has nothing to do with the weather. The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. The nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties is inviting volunteers to help beautify the Dayton Food Pantry, the nonprofit garden center Community Roots & Shoots, and Healthy Communities grounds on Sunday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 209 Dayton Valley Road.

Kids will love the Carnival at Bordewich Elementary School, and it helps raise funds for a local Cub Scout Pack. Mark Twain Elementary is hosting their annual Color Run at Mills Park, just make sure to wear a white shirt.

Nature lovers will find a variety of ways to celebrate the outdoors during Carson City Historical Society’s Earth Day Garden Festival on April 22.

Sheep have arrived in West Carson City for their annual Spring feeding near C Hill.

A large herd of the woolly, cleft-hoofed herbivores can be seen grazing on grasses and shrubs along the backside of C Hill behind the Green House Garden Center off Rhodes and South Curry streets.

The sheep are brought in annually to help reduce wildfire fuels.

The Carson City Historical Society, along with the Mark Twain Garden Club, the Desert Gardeners and the Sierra Desert Garden Club, is holding a Garden Festival on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The weekend has arrived, and it will be an exceptionally long one for the schoolkids of Carson City: spring break begins Monday. There’s a rumor of snowfall for this weekend, but it’s not expected to be too heavy in the valley. Don’t quote me on that, though, I’ve been wrong before.
