Community shred and recycle event Saturday in Carson City to benefit Special Olympics

The Carson City community is invited to participate in a shred and recycle day and barbecue to benefit Special Olympics of Nevada. Document destruction will be done on-site by American Document Destruction and electronics recycling will be collected by Computer Corps.

Inaugural Family Fun Day arrives in Carson City this Saturday at Mills Park

Families unite Saturday at Mills Park in Carson City for the first-ever Northern Nevada Family Fun Day, a community event featuring live music, workshops, shopping, raffles, a Kids Zone, giveaways, raffles and more.

There will be rock climbing demonstrations, face painting, pirates, obstacle courses, a bubble station, music, a photo booth, ice cream, refreshments beginning at 11 a.m. and running until to 9 p.m.

Sunday was a day for law enforcement and Special Olympians as they teamed together at Silver Oak Golf Course to raise $2,200 for local athletic programs.

Nevada Department of Corrections Officer Tony Cloke notes the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraiser has been carried between Peace officers and Special Olympians in Nevada for more than 30 years.

Carson City Sheriff’s Motor Unit raises $500 for Catmandu shelter from recent competition

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit, which adopted the feline shelter Catmandu as the nonprofit organization it would help through the sale of t-shirts at last month's Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, presented a $500 check Wednesday to the organization.

“We’re really grateful for all you’ve done for us,” said Linda Buchanan, founder of the nonprofit Catmandu, which has been struggling financially this year to keep its doors open.

Carson Montessori students exceed fundraising goal, principal agrees to sleep on roof

When educational funding falls short, students and faculty at Carson Montessori in Carson City put their heads together this spring to raise the roof. And for their efforts, the school's principal was tucked in Wednesday night, bedside adjacent to the roof where she agreed to sleep underneath the stars overhead.

Carson High business club looking for donations for national competition

Ricky Garcia, 18, is preparing for the entrepreneurship competition at the National Future Business Leaders of America Convention in Atlanta from June 26 to July 3.

“They give you a situation and you have to come up with a solution,” he explained. “That’s something you have to know how to do in life, whether it’s in business or just personal stuff.”

Carson City Sheriff's Office gets baton in final leg of Law Enforcement Memorial Run

The Carson City Sheriff's Office was handed the baton this Wednesday afternoon in the final leg of the annual Law Enforcement Memorial Run which began April 27 in Las Vegas.

Each leg of the run is completed in the memory of each officer listed on the state law enforcement memorial in Carson City. The final leg is dedicated in memory of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who died in the line of duty August 15, 2015.

Howell will be honored at the 19th annual Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial ceremony Thursday, noon in Carson City.

Latest phone scam: Carson City resident targeted by so-called firefighters association

Another phone scam is making its way around Carson City. The latest involves a telephone number with a 775 area code and an Incline Village prefix in which the perpetrator says he’s collecting money on behalf of the association of firefighters.

Appeal For Kids 2015 campaign to Benefit Austin’s House

Austin’s House in Carson Valley is celebrating eight years of providing compassionate care in Douglas County and nearby rural counties for children in crisis with the annual giving campaign, the 2015 Appeal For Kids. The 10-bedroom facility opened in September 2007 and was built entirely with donations from the community.

Kirsten Krasovec and Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Carl Howell were both killed at the hands of domestic violence abusers, and local shelters have been filled to capacity for months now.
