Flooding is currently impacting much of the region. By late tonight into Monday storms are going to get colder with significant snow accumulation expected Monday through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

With localized drainage flooding happening in many areas around the capital city region today, the Carson River near Carson City is rising and expected to reach peak flood stage Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

With heavy rain arriving and local flooding looking likely, Carson City Public Works crews were out in full force Sunday morning clearing streets of debris and slushy snow piling around drainages.

The Salvation Army of Carson City and Douglas County has opened an emergency evacuation center at the LDS church on Saliman Road in Carson City and will be serving meals as part of its operation.

Carson City emergency managers have produced a video for residents ahead of anticipated flooding throughout western Nevada expected from an an atmospheric river weather event over the weekend.

The Nevada Department of Corrections and Nevada Division of Forestry have deployed 11 inmate fire crews to assist in preparation for possible flooding in Northern Nevada and California. The crews, each made up of 24 minimum security inmates, are in route from Stewart Camp in Carson City, Tonopah, Ely and Three Lakes Valley Camp located approximately 30 miles north of Las Vegas.

With flooding likely in parts of northern Nevada this weekend, residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with what to do before, during and after a flood. The best local resource for information on flooding is the Nevada Floods website. Residents are encouraged to visit the website now, but here is some basic information.

With one last dry day left ahead of the approaching atmospheric river weather system, emergency management officials in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties are urging residents to prepare now in anticipation of weekend flooding throughout the region.

YERINGTON, Nev. — The Lyon County Emergency Management Team completed final plans Friday for the predicted weather and flood event for this upcoming weekend.

County resources are being pre-positioned to monitor and respond to potential flooding. Lyon County is working with the Nevada Division of Emergency Management, National Weather Service and surrounding counties for the past week to prepare for this event.

There has been a lot of talk this week about the 1997 flood. Twenty years ago, on New Year’s Eve Day, 1996, my Dad and I went goose hunting. We had set out our decoys and had a good early morning hunt, however, it started raining so we packed everything up, leaving the bags of decoys in a dry irrigation ditch.

Snow around western Nevada this Thursday has tapered off to showers and is expected to further diminish through the day, according to the National Weather Service. For the rabbit in the photo above taken by Naida Rass of Silver Springs, the overnight storm brought out the wildlife for a snow day.

Imagine a long, narrow river in the sky about 250 to 375 miles wide, moving along with the weather. It transports water vapor with a flow several times faster than the water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. A river that, when it hits land, releases 30-50 percent of the area's annual precipitation in the form or rain or snow in just a couple of days.

With the current storm still producing rain around the Carson City region, forecasters have turned their attention to the next system that will arrive this weekend bringing warmer conditions, rising snow levels and the potential for flooding.

The sunny skies that teased Carson City on Tuesday morning may be the last for a few days as a series of winter storms are moving into the region that will bring some snow but mostly rain to the valley through early Thursday before clearing out and then starting up again Saturday.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation, a non-profit organization that offers Dream Flights to U.S. military veterans living in retirement communities and long-term care facilities, received a $5,000 grant from Vital Life Foundation, a Marquis and Consonus Foundation that supports organizations and programs that provide meaning and vitality in the lives of seniors and staff members living and working in long-term care.

With the next "atmospheric river" system expected to arrive in the Carson City region in the coming days, forecasters are looking at Wednesday into Thursday for potentially damaging winds and heavy rain in the region.

Localized flooding is being experienced throughout much of Carson City as a winter storm continues to bring drenching rain to not only western Nevada but the Sierra.

Carson City Fire Chief and Emergency Manager Bob Schreihans notes that minor street flooding, mud and debris have been the result of the arrival of an "Atmospheric River" type storm, which started early this morning in the Sierra and Western Nevada.

Though there are still six months of school remaining, Carson High School’s counselors say that now is the time for seniors to kick it into gear to go to college. Applications for college are due now and in the next few weeks, and scholarship opportunities begin flooding in during January.

Douglas County and the State of Nevada are hosting an educational event to inform citizens on flood preparation and safety during Flood Awareness Week, Nov. 13-19, 2016. This year’s event will be held on Wednesday, November 16, from 2 pm to 7 pm in the North Room of the Douglas County Community and Senior Center.
