Rain, thunderstorms and cooler weather this week around Carson City region

Low pressure off the coast will pull moisture north from the remnants of Hurricane Dolores. Showers and thunderstorm coverage will increase Monday and Tuesday with the best chances south of Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service.

State damage assessment teams review flooding in Johnson Lane, Stephanie Way areas

Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the current flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County.

The State Damage Assessment Teams came out to the affected areas Thursday to determine the amount of damage to public infrastructure as well as attempting to determine private property damage following state and FEMA damage assessment criteria. Douglas County hopes to have this report completed as soon as possible.

What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players as they open Murder in an English Manor at the Brewery Arts Center. Senior Follies debuts this year’s performance, Flashback, at the Community Center.

Douglas County agencies respond to more flooding Thursday in Johnson Lane area

Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the current flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County.

Douglas County has activated a flood hot line for residents who have been affected by the flooding. The number to call is (775) 782-6262 or visit douglasflood2015@gmail.com.

The Johnson Lane Firehouse Station 6 is being utilized as the local field office for citizens to report damage that has occurred in this incident.

Flash Flood Warning goes up for Carson City, and portions of Douglas and Lyon counties

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Eastern Carson City, West Central Lyon County and Northwestern Douglas County until 2:15 p.m.

Waterspout spotted Wednesday night over Lake Tahoe

A rare waterspout occurred on Lake Tahoe Wednesday night shortly after 9 pm. Usually, waterspouts are caused by differential heating currents with small scale rotation super-imposed aloft.

This event, however, appears to have had a little more rotation involved and a little less differential heating considering the time it occurred, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Eyewitnesses saw the waterspout form near the mouth of Emerald Bay and move towards Tahoe Keys very quickly. Fortunately, there were no reports of this moving onshore.

Douglas County agrees to disaster declaration in flooded areas of Carson Valley

Minden, Nevada – Douglas County Emergency Management is currently working on managing the current flooding in the Stephanie and Johnson Lane areas of Douglas County.

Douglas County, like other northern Nevada Counties has been hit with several daily rounds of heavy precipitation laden thunderstorms for over a week now.

Thunderstorms and flash flooding expected throughout Western Nevada and Sierra

Wednesday brings another chance of slow moving thunderstorms expected to develop again over the Sierra and western Nevada, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Flash Flood Watch for the region until midnight.

UPDATE 7PM: A Flash Flood Warning for Carson City was lifted as of 6:30PM. The area is still under a Flash Flood Watch until 9 p.m. A large portion of Douglas County remains under a Flash Flood Warning until 8 p.m. according to a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Reno.

At 4:58 p.m. Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm producing torrential rainfall moving north from Carson Valley into Carson City. Flash flooding is expected to occur. Excessive rainfall over the warned area may cause mud slides near steep terrain and along Highway 395.

Flash Flood Warning issued for Central Douglas County, northwestern Lyon and Storey counties

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Central Douglas County, Northwestern Lyon and Storey counties until 6:30 p.m. Monday.

At 3:30 p.m. Doppler radar indicated a thunderstorm producing torrential rainfall about 10 miles southeast of Gardnerville. Flash flooding is expected to occur. Excessive rainfall over the warned area may cause mud slides near steep terrain along Highway 395 and near Gardnerville Ranchos.

Flash Food Watch for Lake Tahoe, Carson City region and Western Nevada

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch today for much of western Nevada, including Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Dayton areas. Abundant low to mid level moisture from sustained south-southeast flow will combine with daytime heating to produce thunderstorms throughout throughout the region.

Cooler summer weather along with isolated to scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms are expected throughout the week for the Sierra and Carson City region as low pressure off the California coast continues to pull moisture north into the Great Basin, according to the National Weather Service.

Another series of strong thunderstorms have developed south of Carson City along the Eastern Sierra and Highway 395 corridor this afternoon and appear to be pushing northward, bringing heavy rain and the potential for flooding, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Flash Flood Warning until 7 p.m. for Central Lyon County and Northeastern Douglas County.

Fire crews extinguish lightning caused fires overnight around Douglas County

East Fork Fire Protection District reports that all six fires that were reported Saturday are at 1-acre or less in size and, have been extinguished or have crews on scene mopping up the fires as of Sunday morning. The crews have orders for full extinguishment, said Sgt. Pat Brooks of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Concerns are the potential for new fires starts due to the multiple lighting strikes that occurred during Saturday's storm that pushed through the valley.

Heat Wave: Record high temperatures, thunderstorms possible across northern Nevada

UPDATE 2:20PM: The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday for much of eastern Sierra and western Nevada in anticipation of thunderstorms and strong outflow winds.

As record temperatures are anticipated for the region this weekend, moisture will begin to filter across the Sierra with isolated thunderstorms possible as early as Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Strong outflow winds and dry lightning strikes are possible with these storms Friday and Saturday.

NDOT announces Highway 50 erosion project south of Carson City up Spooner grade

A $1.2 million road project to reduce erosion, preserve water quality and enhance storm drains along Highway 50 in south Carson City and west along Spooner grade will begin this month, the Nevada Department of Transportation announced Tuesday.

Weather Service: Band of thunderstorms moving south may produce flooding

The National Weather Service is tracking a line of thunderstorms that are moving south. The storms extend from the California state line to east of Fallon.
There’s an Urban and Stream Flood Advisory until 10:45 p.m. for the following areas: Southern Washoe County, North Central Lyon County, Northwestern Churchill County and Storey County. This may change if the storm continues on its southerly path.
Heavy rain was being reported at 9:30 p.m. from Silver Springs to Fallon, according to the weather service.

Flash flooding potential likely as storm plume digs into Western Nevada and Sierra

UPDATE: From the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department: Due to standing water, and poor playing conditions created from the thunderstorms and rain last night, games have been canceled for tonight, June 10, 2015. Tonight’s games will be made up at the end of the season, and Monday’s games will be played according to schedule.

Storm over Dayton area also produces hail

Not only did Tuesday night's storm bring flash flooding, but it also produced a good amount of hail, too. This video and photos were taken by Brianne True of Dayton. She shot them by the bluff, just before you head over the hill into Stagecoach.
