Holiday Crawl draws hundreds, raises money for program giving Carson City kids a Christmas

The Carson City community held its third annual Holiday Crawl Benefit 2017 on Saturday to raise money for the Holiday with a Hero campaign that gives local homeless children a chance to shop for themselves and family for Christmas. The downtown Carson City event was attended by more than 400 people, up about 100 from last year, organizers say.

Cat stuck on power pole jumps to safety with the help of the Carson City Fire Department

A cat stuck on a power pole brought a lot of attention to a Winnie Street apartment complex Thursday with the Carson City Fire Department showing up to see to it the cat came down safe. Or in this case, it fell into the safe hands of two Carson City firefighters holding a tarp.

The third annual Holiday with a Hero Pub Crawl is the event, with all proceeds from ticket sales going to a community wide effort to give homeless children in Carson City a Christmas shopping spree at Walmart.

Carson City Fire Department investigates light smoke at Minnesota Street care facility

UPDATE 2:03PM: A mechanical issue is likely to blame for a presence of light smoke inside a Carson Tahoe Hospital care facility on North Minnesota Street, according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Shirey. All those evacuated are now allowed back into the facility.

First firefighting boat of its kind launched at Lake Tahoe

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District christened Marine 24 earlier this month, giving Lake Tahoe its first year-round firefighting boat. At a cost of nearly $500,000, the vessel is able to fight fires from on board as well as piping water from the lake into water tenders.

Highway 395 now open as progress being made on Chris Fire in Mono County

Highway 395 remains closed Tuesday at the Nevada-California state line as firefighters continue to battle the Chris Fire that began Monday west of U.S. Route 395, about five miles north of Sonora Junction near the Chris Flat Campground.

Carson City Fire Department called to structure fire at Q's Barbecue on Fairview

UPDATE 8:20AM: Managers at Q's barbecue in Carson City say they hope to be open by Monday following a kitchen fire late Friday night. The restaurant was unoccupied at time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition helped identify those students who are most in need. 2017 Holiday With a Hero Begins: Carson City fundraiser provides Christmas to local homeless children

The 14th annual Holiday With a Hero campaign is officially underway. The goal is to give at least 200 homeless children in Carson City a holiday gift to remember by presenting them with a $100 gift card to spend during a special shopping spree at Walmart.

UPDATE 5:17PM: One Firefighter sustained a minor injury during the suppression process. The cause was determined to be accidental, according to the Carson City Fire Department Facebook page.

NV Energy reports power outage in East Carson City

UPDATE: 10:40PM: NV Energy now reports that restoration of power to the Ashby Court neighborhood is not expected before 12 a.m. Sunday morning. About 440 customers remain without power in the area at this hour.

Workers reportedly struck a live underground electrical line Saturday evening, according to Carson City Emergency Dispatch, causing a power outage to 438 customers in the Ashby Court neighborhood of East Carson City.

UPDATE 3:41PM: A Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center dispatcher reports mutual assistance units for both Dayton area fires have been canceled. The incidents are under command of the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District.

Carson City Fire Department was called late Thursday morning to a brush fire reported in the area of South Carson Street and Highway 50 West near the Spooner junction. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames before it began to spread.

Carson City honors fallen Nevada firefighters at memorial

The Nevada State Honor Guard as well as the Las Vegas Firefighters Local 1285 Pipe and Drum Corps opened services Saturday morning at the Nevada State Firefighters Memorial in Mills Park to honor two Las Vegas area firefighters who died in the line of duty last year.

Forest Service plans include pile burning in Little Valley and Clear Creek south of Carson City

The U.S. Forest Service announced Wednesday its hazardous fuels reduction burning plans for the Carson and Bridgeport Rangers Districts. Among those planned pile burns include 102 acres in Little Valley near the area of last year's catastrophic wildfire in Washoe Valley.

Life of Julia Bulette featured at Leisure Hour Club dinner meeting

Members of the Carson City Leisure Hour Club will learn of the loves and losses of Julia Bulette, renowned resident of Virginia City, at their dinner meeting on Wednesday, October 18.

Bulette’s murder began a manhunt that last over a year and resulted in the arrest, trial, and the April 24, 1869 execution of John Millian.

In what was the largest gathering of people in Nevada up to that time, 3,000 to 4,000 people were present at the hanging.

Fire burning off of Stephanie Way and East Valley Road in Douglas County

UPDATE 6:52PM: Firefighters were able to get the upper hand on the Stephanie Fire burning in northeast Douglas County, with a reported 10 acres burned. It was originally reported as 18 acres but was downsized. The cause was a vehicle. Douglas County notes there wasn't a plane crash that had been rumored. East Fork Fire and multiple agencies responded.

Collapsed building from snow load at South Lake Tahoe getting new roof and new look

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Work crews have been busy at the historic Pioneer Center on Harrison Avenue where a roof collapsed on Jan. 23, flooding out the liquor store and thrift shop beneath it.

Two names to be added to Nevada firefighters’ memorial at Carson City's Mills Park
