JoAnne Skelly Column: How are honey bees doing?

Bee populations have been declining with the total number of managed honey bee colonies down from 5 million in the 1940s to 2.5 million in November 2015, according to the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

Raptors are visible in Carson City, too

The annual Eagles and Agriculture event kicks off this week in the Carson Valley, a wildlife viewing exhibition that attracts hundreds of visitors to the area to see birds of prey feeding and nesting below the eastern slopes of the Carson Range.

But Carson City residents don't have to leave the Eagle Valley to catch glimpses of raptors. We've got them in our own backyards.

JoAnne Skelly column: Thoughts on Winter Composting

Can we compost in winter? Winter composting may simply involve tossing ingredients on the pile and waiting for temperatures to warm up in spring to complete the decomposition process.

On the other hand, if you maintain a warm temperature in the interior of the pile, you can keep the decomposing microbes happy and somewhat active. With a warm center, the cold exterior temperature of the pile won’t harm them.

Wild horse band arrive in Carson City neighborhood for night feeding

Carson Now reader Alejandro Ruelas took these great photos early Monday night at Montez Drive and Sherman Lane in northeast Carson City. Earlier in the morning, the herd of horses, seen in the photos here, taken by Carson City sheriff's Sgt. Scott McDaniel, were seen moving across Bowers Lane and Arrowhead.

JoAnne Skelly: The Alocasia Gift Plant

I received an unusual foliage plant for Christmas. The leaves look like elongated elephant ears about 12 inches long. They are glossy dark green with silvery-white veins and reddish-green undersides.

They are narrow and wavy. After extensive searching online, I found out it is Alocasia sanderiana, commonly called Sander’s Alocasia, elephant ear or Kris (after some kind of foreign dagger). This plant originates in the Philippines. It is a beautiful and unique looking specimen.

JoAnne Skelly: Indoor houseplants can host winter hitchhiking pests

Just when you thought your summer battles with insects were over, I have to remind you about insect infestations on houseplants. Your houseplants may be at risk if you recently brought outdoor container plants into the house. Usually containerized plants pick up hitchhiking insects while they are outdoors and these travelers start breeding when brought into a warm interior.

JoAnne Skelly: Fall leafhopper home invasion

In the last week, leafhoppers have invaded our house both inside and out. Suddenly I’m seeing dozens of brown wedge-shaped insects crawling all over my windows and screens. They are even on the kitchen walls. These annoying critters, also called planthoppers, are less than a ¼-inch long, and they keep me busy squishing them each day. I decided to find out more about them.

Orphaned Kittens at Catmandu Need Your Help

While plowing his field on Wednesday, a local farmer came upon the body of a feral mother cat who had been literally ripped to pieces by predators. After burying the remains, he climbed back on his tractor to resume plowing. A small movement by the wheel caught his eye. Looking down, he saw two tiny kittens lying in the dirt. They were cold, hungry and frightened.

Being Well Carson City: A Social Media Life

I think the irony of the Ashley Madison hacking story is probably what prompted me to write this article about personal privacy. While a large number of people desire to keep their personal activities secret, it is amazing to compare the “small number of Ashley Madison users” to the enormous number of us who appear to be conducting much of our lives openly on the web through Facebook and many other sites.

Column: Elm leaf beetles common this time of year

Last week I wrote about root weevils eating leaves. This week’s pests are the elm leaf beetles. While elms are hardy drought tolerant trees for arid Nevada, they are plagued by elm leaf beetles every year. By this time of year, the trees look half-dead with white to brown ragged leaves.

– Marlene Maffei, Food for Thought, Executive Director

Doug 'Mac the Naw' Busey's Lake Tahoe and Sierra fishing report: Watch out for rattlesnakes

Hello fellow anglers, I have to tell you that last weekend's Lampe Park Kids derby was rewarding. The fishing was slow both days, but there were a few nice fish caught. At one time I felt as if I were at a ball game. I could hear the crowd  cheering  at one end of Willow Creek with the voices in unison rising and lowering as a 4-year-old angler was reeling in a 7 pound trout.
