Spring means sheep at C Hill

Sheep have arrived in West Carson City for their annual Spring feeding near C Hill.

A large herd of the woolly, cleft-hoofed herbivores can be seen grazing on grasses and shrubs along the backside of C Hill behind the Green House Garden Center off Rhodes and South Curry streets.

The sheep are brought in annually to help reduce wildfire fuels.

Nevada Forestry: White satin moth outbreak infests 226 acres at Lake Tahoe park

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Division of Forestry conducted trapping and aerial surveys this season, focusing on the white satin moth outbreak at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. The survey revealed 226 acres of infestation, ranging from minimal to heavy defoliation.

First West Nile Case Reported in Carson City-Douglas County Area for 2017

Carson City Health and Human Services and Douglas County Mosquito Abatement are reporting the first human case of West Nile virus in the Carson City, Douglas County area for 2017. The individual confirmed to have West Nile Virus had the more serious form of the illness, which can impact the brain and surrounding tissues.

UNR faculty receive $500,000 grant from U.S. Department of Defense for mosquito research

University of Nevada, Reno entomologist Andrew Nuss and biologist Dennis Mathew are looking for a way to stop the spread of mosquito-borne disease. The goal of their research is to identify key mosquito odorant receptors that govern mosquito host-preference for humans and to genetically modify those genes in order to create mosquito strains that avoid biting humans.

Petco Foundation Invests in Pets of the Homeless’ service and therapy animals

Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based, national organization has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its emergency veterinary care program to service and therapy animals that belong to the homeless.
