Western Nevada College held a unique Multi-faith Baccalaureate Service on May 20 in Carson City, the first in its 41 plus years of existence.

According to religious statesman Rajan Zed, co-organizer of this Service along with Douglas Diversity Student Club of WNC; faith leaders belonging to Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i and Native American traditions blessed the graduates with their respective prayers in this Service. Dance and music also formed part of this ceremony and a representative of non-believers also addressed the Service.

A Nevada Assembly Committee took testimony on Senate Joint Resolution 13 on Thursday when many of those who had testified earlier this year repeated their support for or opposition to the measure that would repeal Nevada’s constitutional ban against same-sex marriage.

The Carson City Fire Department will hold a training this morning at Station 52, 2400 College Parkway, that includes the setting off of fireworks, said Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.

The training exercise, which should last for about an hour, will begin at around 9 a.m. The training is part of a class on fire inspection of licensed pyrotechnic companies, Giomi explained.

The explosions are expected to be relatively minor and heard in the nearby area, said Giomi.

Cybersecurity, prevention, community planning, intelligence and public information are among 10 priorities outlined by the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security for future funding, officials announced Friday.
Gov. Brian Sandoval and 16 voting members of the Commission made the recommendations, according to a news release.

A group of 50 community leaders recently gathered for a Truckee Tomorrow meeting to discuss economic development strategies. The meeting was facilitated by Ryan Sharp, Director of the Center for Strategic Economic Research (CSER), an economic research and consulting group. Mr. Gallagher stated (and I am paraphrasing here) “our children are not allowed to pray in public schools”

It’s turning out to be one of those winters that isn’t very mountain bike friendly. Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol issued nearly 12,000 traffic citations to motorists observed talking, texting or reading non-voice communication while operating a motor vehicle on Nevada’s highways in 2012.

Thirty of the offenders last year received their second citation for the same offense with 25 of those witnessed on their phone for a third time and cited once more. In all, as of Dec. 26, 2012, there were 11,992 citations issued.

About 400 Nevada guardsmen have begun training at various locations on and off the Las Vegas Strip on New Year's Eve this year for the 12th annual Vigilant Sentinel training exercise. The training is also being done in conjunction with the Las Vegas Metro Police. More than half of the guardsmen participating are from Northern Nevada. About 300,000 people are expected to party on the Las Vegas Strip on Monday, according to Las Vegas Metro Police.

Overeating at Thanksgiving means four days of overindulgence. It’s long enough to set a pattern for life. Thanksgiving dinner alone brings with it about five thousand calories, that’s a lot of eating. We overeat to relieve tension, and there is sure enough of that to go around at Thanksgiving. Relatives who haven’t seen each other for years get together for ego mashing over the potatoes. You end up with a migraine and a killer desire for pie. And we were born with overdeveloped guilt feelings regarding pie.

As a classical conservative and former broadcaster, I am always highly amused when I hear the extreme right wing commentators who proudly claim and boast of their ratings dominance throughout the spectrum of modern media. The structural core of their argument is that the “ratings” reflect the mood of America.

Unfortunately, those who are incapable of thinking for themselves and rely on these outlets for their political information, and who kneel in complete supplication at their altars, do so at their own peril. But,then again, there is no known cure for willful ignorance.

The Department of Public Safety Capitol Police Division will conduct a full scale emergency preparedness exercise Wednesday at the State Capitol in Carson City from 8 to 11 a.m.
The exercise will involve all employees assigned to the State Capitol. The Capitol building will be closed to the general public while this exercise is held, said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Barbara Stapleton.
In September, the staff of the Capitol performed an emergency evacuation drill, in October, an earthquake drill was held and this exercise completes the three part employee safety training.

My grandfather lived through the Great War - the War to end all wars. And I think of him on this eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month honoring the Armistice. I remember my grandfather on this day along with my father who fought in WWII in Africa and Italy. Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report through November 4: On Monday, October 29, traffic control will be in effect between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. on the following route to allow for the movement of an oversized load: Carson City Mills Park, William Street, US Highway 50, Arrowhead Drive, and Technology Way.

A Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy was injured in a motorcycle accident Thursday near Lake Tahoe Club Drive and Old Clear Creek Road, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

The largest Great Nevada Shakeout in its three-year history, and part of the world’s largest public earthquake drill with 18 million participants globally, is Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. More than a half a million Nevadans are registered to participate in the annual statewide public earthquake drill, and with just a few days to go the Nevada Seismological Laboratory would like 100,000 more people registered.

The Tunnel Creek Cafe up at Incline Village is now open! Max Jones and Patti McMullan, who currently own and operate Flume Trail Bikes at Spooner Lake, have recently opened a new cafe at Tunnel Creek Station. A series of drills simulating emergencies such as extreme weather, power outages, aircraft mishaps, lost climbers and transportation issues will be performed this weekend as part of operation Green Light organized by the Nevada Division of Emergency Management and the the Department of Homeland Security.
Operation Green Light will further develop and strengthen regional partnerships and enhance emergency preparedness, response, and prevention capabilities, according to Nevada Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Gail Powell. Participating counties include Carson City, Douglas, Elko, Humboldt, Lyon, Pershing, Storey and Washoe.
