Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 07/06/2012 - 6:57amDave Jenkins returns for his second performance at A Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, July 11 with his band, Pablo Cruise.
Jenkins performed four years ago for the inaugural event, which takes place at Café at Adele’s, but his love of music began at a tender age.

Health Benefits of Exercise
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Sun, 07/01/2012 - 2:25pmYou probably won’t read this, since it’s about exercise, but I think it’s time for a few words about the benefits of sweating. First of all, exercise isn’t supposed to be easy—especially if you have been a lounge lizard for years. And, no it isn’t over in six weeks. You will need to sweat and be very consistent about your workout schedule for a lot longer than six weeks. Sounds depressing doesn’t it? It means you must build your life around exercise, not vise versa!

Carson Supervisors Subverting the Public Will
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Mon, 06/11/2012 - 9:08amOne of the biggest, once-in-a-lifetime thrills this writer experienced was first-time voting eligibility in local, state and national elections. What a privilege to have my official opinion added in to the larger community, with an impact on public decisions going forward. Much can be learned from the morning-after election results, which chronicle where we are as a community at a given moment. . .a snapshot of what's on people's collective minds, or at least those who choose to exercise their voting rights.

Submitted by BikeCarson.com on Wed, 05/09/2012 - 11:38amAbout a year and a half ago, I met Mike Ball down at the Tap Shack, a little hole in the wall bar in downtown Carson City. He and a couple other of my friends were discussing building a bar on wheels that could be pedaled around town. While it sounded very cool, I passed it off as one of those crazy ideas that bubbles up after a few pints of beer. Something akin to quitting your job and backpacking across Spain, or the ultimate bank heist. It sounded like too much effort to me.

Summer Legs
Submitted by Jerry Vance on Sun, 03/25/2012 - 4:21pmI love spring time. You whip off the slacks, have a good look at your legs and decide that swimming is out for another year. Now, why do your legs look like that? I'll tell you why, because you sit all day, deny yourself water, eat lots of salty fatty foods, and you DON’T EXERCISE! That's putting the blame where it belongs. No one is happy with the condition of their legs. They're either to fat, too muscular, blue, (veins), or they’re w-a-y too short. And, most legs have funny little areas of puckered skin. It's called Fat. Have a look at your kid's legs.

The Current Republican Leadership, the Catholic Church, Religious Conservatives and the Perils of Self-Refuting Logic
Submitted by admin on Thu, 02/16/2012 - 2:28pmIn the United States a political party does not become the majority party in this country by becoming ideologically pure. They become the majority by becoming larger, inclusive, and superior to their political opponents not only in size, but should also be anchored in and unafraid of intellectual and discursive dialogue, devoid of reactionary emotionalism. Then and only then, can conservatism present and extend to the electorate our concepts in such a way that we will be accepted by the majority of our fellow citizens.
Fitness on a Wire: Reasons to start getting healthy
Submitted by Jerry Vance on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 4:50pmHave you given any thought to building your body up and increasing your overall health? Would you like a few reasons why you should?
Let's start with a tremendous gain in cardiovascular endurance. When you chase your kids you’ll be able to catch them. Endurance means your heart rate will drop and your heart will beat less to supply your body with the needed oxygen. The proper terminology is "greater stroke volume". You will achieve better circulation, and during cold winter months your body will benefit greatly from that increase.

Fitness on the Wire: Cold Weather Muscles
Submitted by Jerry Vance on Wed, 12/21/2011 - 3:42pmCARSON CITY, Nev. — Cold weather exercise has its drawbacks. Some of the drawbacks are mental. But a lot of them are physical. Cold stiff muscles don’t lend themselves to quick fitness and sports moves. A person’s range of motion also takes a big dip when it’s cold.
The human body functions best within a very narrow range of outside temperature, usually between 65 and 75 degrees with a humidity reading of about 45 percent. The further you get from this ideal temperature range, the harder it becomes for your body to compensate.

All your extra time is spent in the kitchen cooking or in the grocery store buying more food. Most people over-buy on Thanksgiving and over-eat.
