CARSON CITY — A half dozen Speech and Debate students from Carson High School earned national rankings at an Online National Speech and Debate Tournament earlier this month, June 14-20. The contest featured 1,322 schools and more than 5,300 students across the nation.

UPDATE: The Poeville Fire is burning in grass and brush on the eastside of Peavine Mountain northwest of Reno, Nevada. At 9 p.m., the fire was estimated at 1,500 acres and zero percent contained. Local, state, county, and federal firefighters are on scene.

UPDATE 6:04 p.m.: 250 personnel from multiple agencies including the Carson City Fire Department are on scene battling the fire. The acreage is estimated at 650 acres.

Featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon will be League of Women Voters of Nevada President Sondra Cosgrove. She will share the new Fair Maps Nevada plan and circulate their ballot question petition.

Due to pandemic mitigation measures, Fair Maps Nevada won a court ruling extending the signature-gathering deadline for their redistricting reform ballot question to August 3rd.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region for all to enjoy. New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada are in effect Friday, so make sure to bring a mask and practice social distancing to local events.

Periodically, the Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation recognizes individuals, organizations, and businesses for having made notable contributions to our community and for their support of the Foundation’s and Carson City Parks Department’s missions by selecting them to receive a Community Award. FCCPR’s Board of Directors recently selected Friends of Silver Saddle and Cinderlite Trucking Corporation and Materials (Cinderlite) for this year’s Community Awards.

Carson City Kiwanis will host the 7th Annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day fundraiser on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City, NV. The net proceeds from the fundraiser will support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Marilyn Elaine Academic Scholarship, awarded annually to local high school graduates.

With small businesses reopening and needing to adjust their operations amid COVID-19 restrictions and economic challenges, University of Nevada, Reno Extension is offering three different online programs this week to help small businesses with specific challenges.

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting nine new positive cases and no additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 289, with 209 recoveries and seven deaths, 73 cases remain active.

Featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon will be Dee Dee Foremaster, executive director of the Rural Center for Independent Living and Do Drop In day refuge for the homeless and mentally ill. The topic of her presentation will be "Housing First: Why the first and primary need of an individual experiencing homelessness is to obtain stable housing, and that all other issues affecting that individual can be addressed once housing is obtained."

Carson City Health and Human Services (CCHHS) is reporting five new positive cases and two additional recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region.

This brings the total number of cases to 271, with 197 recoveries and seven deaths, 67 cases remain active.

The Carson City Host Lions will hold an Installation Dinner on Wednesday, June 24 beginning with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. at the Carson City Plaza Events Center, with dinner following at 6 p.m. Region Chair Adam Hopkins from the Reno Cigar Lions Club will perform the installation ceremony. The Jazz and Beyond festival committee announces that the winner of the 2020 poster and program cover art contest is Karen Kreyeski, for her entry, “After Midnight Jam.” The winner of the T-shirt design is Evan Tynan, for “2020 Jazz & Beyond Festival Logo.” These were selected from ten entries to highlight the 17th annual Carson City music and art festival.

In a program similar to PG&E and other electric utilities in California, NV Energy announced last week that it will implement its own plan that would shut off power to reduce wildfire risk in the Lake Tahoe area in the event of weather-related events such as strong, gusty winds.

The Virtual Meals on Wheels fundraiser hosted by Carson City Kiwanis proved to be a big success.

The event raised $3,855.44, including a $1,000 anonymous donation and a donation from the club itself of $1,000 donation.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled to take place June 18 at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center, located at 851 E. William St.

Featured speaker at Monday's virtual Democratic luncheon will be James E. "Jim" Wilson, Jr., presiding judge for Department II of the First Judicial District Court, which serves Carson City and Storey Counties. First elected in 2008, Judge Wilson was re-elected unopposed in the 2014 primary and was re-elected again running unopposed in this year's primary.

UPDATE 11:14AM: The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning from noon to 8 p.m. Friday for the following areas: Southern Mono County, Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties, West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County and Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral counties. The Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Mono County, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties, Hawthorne, Yerington, Smith Valley, Mina, Schurz, Fernley, Fallon, Lovelock, Silver Springs, Nixon, and Imlay. Carson City, and Carson Valley are not in the Wind Advisory area.

Strong winds expected Friday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue high wind and fire weather watches for portions of Northern Nevada.

Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space welcomes you to our Volunteer Series: Weedy Wednesdays! This volunteer series is running every third Wednesday June through August of this year. Join us after your workday from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. at various trails and open spaces around our city to learn about vegetation and work to remove noxious weeds.

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center released findings Wednesday from its annual Lake Tahoe Clarity Report, which showed In 2019 the lake's famed clarity decreased nearly 8 feet from the previous year’s dramatic 10-foot improvement. The average annual value in 2019 was 62.7 feet. The lowest value was recorded in 2017, when clarity was 60 feet.

This Saturday, June 13 is Nevada’s annual Free Fishing Day. That means anglers here in the Silver State can fish without purchasing a fishing license, but only for that day. All other fishing regulations, such as limits and means of take, still apply.

After nearly 2-1/2 months of being closed due to COVID-19, the Carson City Library reopened Monday with patrons perusing and checking out books, ebooks and audiobooks from the library’s OverDrive collection.

CARSON CITY — Through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Nevada will be deploying 35 crisis counselors statewide to support Nevadans coping with the effects of COVID-19. The program will focus on a population health approach that encourages healthy coping and active management of stressors, building resiliency and fostering compassion.
