Elementary School

The last Carson City School Board meeting of January will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street beginning at 7 p.m.

On the docket for discussion will be the rezoning of Fremont Elementary-zoned students for Eagle Valley, recognition of teachers, an update on the elementary reading program, and more.

At the first school board meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 14, Mike Walker was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees. He replaced former President Stacie Wilke-McCulloch, as the school board’s leader.

The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. The 43rd annual Wild Sheep Show will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention. Comedian Marc Yaffee headlines the Carson Comedy Club on Saturday with much more in store for the weekend! The second week of January has blown in quite fiercely, with a High Wind Warning to last through 1 p.m. Tuesday. Activities around the capital city include the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the library, a brown bag luncheon featuring famed environmental writer Michael Branch at the Nevada State Library and Archives, the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a meeting of the Carson City School Board, live cool jazz at Living the Good Life and more.

CARSON CITY — Mark Twain Elementary School has been selected to receive funding and support for the next five years to build and maintain a FIRST LEGO League team for students in grades 4-8, ages 9-14. The funding opportunity, totaling more than $6,150 over the course of the next five years, comes as part of the Tesla K-12 Education Investment in Nevada program.

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Events include the Winter Round Up Run at Centennial Park, the Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge, plus you can take a post-New Year's stroll while the weather is nice during Saturday's Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. CARSON CITY — Congratulations to Yahir Herrera, third grader from Mark Twain Elementary School, and Adria Bass, a kindergartner from Bordewich Bray Elementary School. Both were awarded prizes for their parents’ participation in a survey designed to develop a School Safety Review Study.

Heading into the weekend, post-Christmas holiday activities continue around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Christmas Through the Years presentation at the Carson Valley Community Theater, Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop, musicians Lauren Kepler and Dan Cypher at Bella Vita Bistro, laughs at the Carson Comedy Club and much more!

CARSON CITY — Empire Elementary School hosted the second of four Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Parent Nights Tuesday, Dec. 17. More than 250 participants gathered last night to experience fun hands-on experiments and student-showcased STEM projects, which were taught throughout the last quarter of activities and learning.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

P.E. Teachers and students celebrated when more than 50 hockey sticks, balls and reversible training jerseys as well as nets, goals and shooter tutors were donated to both Carson Middle School and Bordewich Bray Elementary School today.

The Vegas Golden Knights offered the equipment and materials during the hockey clinics.

Carson City, Nev. (Dec. 13, 2019) — Administrators and educators at Carson City’s Mark Twain Elementary School will host Posada 2019, Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The event, open to all students and families, is part of the English Second Language (ESL) Department’s iCan Initiative designed to increase parent and family involvement for students and to help reinforce and extend learning taught during regular classroom instruction. It will include piñatas, face painting, traditional Hispanic holiday food and music, family activities, photos and more.

Over 12 years ago, Denise DiMarzo recognized that the holidays aren’t always a joyous occasion for every family. While working as an office manager for a local elementary school in Carson City and speaking with children every day, DiMarzo realized that that many families struggled to get through the holidays.

The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.

On December 5, 2019 Carson City Elks Lodge #2177 Exalted Ruler Bruce Jurgensen, along with PER Kent Mayer, presented dictionaries to 76 third graders at Empire Elementary School.

This is the 3rd constitutive year that the Lodge has presented dictionaries to local third graders.

Nevada's own Vegas Golden Knights will be hosting Hockey Clinics at Schools in Carson City on Friday, Dec. 13, and a Watch Party is scheduled at the Governor’s Mansion to see the Knights Play the Dallas Stars.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of holiday events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Silver and Snowflake Festival of Lights, the 24th annual Parade of Lights in Gardnerville, the annual Project Empty Bowls dinner held at the Carson Mall, a Holiday Crawl in downtown Carson City and much more!
