Community members are invited to free workshops for guiding the Carson City Library’s five-year strategic plan, with the first workshop Feb. 16, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., including morning refreshments and lunch.

A group of nine Assembly members and five state senators have formed a new caucus focused on economic development through the lens of technology and businesses that bring tech jobs to Nevada.

When it comes to industry, Nevada has been known since its infancy for the three majors: gaming, mining and ranching.

However, in the last decade, we’ve seen an expansion into many other industries as well, with technology quickly becoming the most prevalent since Tesla relocated to our desert and began the trend of big tech companies building in our region.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation officially launched a statewide work-based learning hub, LifeWorksNV.org, for young adults in high school, post-secondary or out of school to find internships, apprenticeships, and on-the-job training.

Question 6 in the coming election asks whether Nevada’s Constitution shall be amended to require that, beginning in 2022, all Nevada sellers of retail electricity increase the amount of “renewable” energy resources they use so that at least 50 percent of their electricity comes from those resources by 2030.

We have long supported increasing diversity in energy supplies via economic development of renewables. But the mandates proposed by Question 6 are a big mistake and we strongly counsel voting against it.

CARSON CITY — In the grips of a recession back in the early part of this decade, the U.S. Department of Labor enlisted Western Nevada College — and other community colleges nationwide — to develop work-training programs as a catalyst to improve the economy.

Primary and secondary education (K-12) has been the second fastest growing category of Nevada state spending over the past decade, rising from $1.24-billion in fiscal year 2006 (FY06) to $2.22-billion in FY17. It grew 33 percent faster than the incomes of Nevada families and businesses.

Tesla announced an initial $1.5 million in funding grants at Thursday's Nevada Board of Education meeting. The grant is the first funds towards its agreement to contribute $37.5 million over five years to K-12 education in Nevada.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development board approved applications for five businesses, that will create 103 new jobs and make nearly $119 million in capital investments in Douglas, Washoe, Humboldt and Clark counties.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development announced Thursday that five Carson City area programs will receive nearly $442,000 in community development block grants.

Nevada Humanities is pleased to announce that 27 grants totaling over $104,500 were awarded to fund humanities programs across Nevada, including four in Carson City area.

PAMPLONA, SPAIN — Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval joined the President Uxue Barkos of the Historic Community of Navarre on Wednesday to sign a memo of understanding between the state and the province on collaboration in economic development. The signing was preceded by a meeting with the National Center for Renewable Energies to share policies, initiatives, projects and best practices regarding the development and use of renewable energy.

LAS VEGAS — The Nevada Department of Education and Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation are set to host the Governor’s Education to Workforce Summit Thursday, June 28, an event that aims to strengthen the education-to-workforce pipeline for the New Nevada economy.

Polaris Industries Inc. officially announced plans Friday to build a 475,000 square-foot multi-brand distribution center in Fernley.
