Fall down the rabbit hole and find yourself at the Community Center for the matinee of Alice in Wonderland Jr. Check out Children’s Day on the Comstock in Virginia City for food and family fun.

What a wonderful community we live in. Music, theater, hiking, biking, wining, dining, walking, TED-talking, animal loving, state governing, and so much more are available in our valley. The days are getting longer and there is so much in store for us in the coming weeks and months as we journey into summer. Take a good gander at my list of what’s going on in the Carson City area. It is always arranged chronologically by start time.

SATURDAY:

April showers are coming, but that just means brighter blooms. After this morning, there will be pinwheels sprouting from the lawn in front of the Legislature, and you are welcome to help in the planting. TEDxCarsonCity makes it's debut today: stream it online here if you weren't able to get tickets. Fathers and daughters are in for a treat at the Once Upon a Time Enchanted Ball at Carson High.

Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh in "Fire Over England" at the Black Box Theater, Brewery Arts Center, on April 5.

Got kids? The Boys and Girls Club is where you want to be today for the Second Annual Early Childhood Expo. Curious George and Clifford the big red dog can’t wait to say hello. Take a trip out to the Dayton State Park to search for animal tracks and more with a park ranger. If you’re kid free today, then the Downtown Business Association Wine Walk is for you. The young and the young-at-heart will find something fun to do this weekend: just check out the whole list for your options and hit the town.

The spring thaw has begun, and the event listing for the next few days is proof. There are quite a few options for music, art, theater, and more. Downtown offers live music at Westside Pour House and Bella Fiore, comedy at the Carson Nugget, and an Art Show for Carson High Senior, Erica Murray, at the Brewery Arts Center. Living the Good Life and Glen Eagles have dinner music for you. An afternoon treat is best found at Yogurt Beach: all proceeds help the family of three year old Maya Morrison battling leukemia. Keep reading for all of today’s options.

Got kids? Plenty of fun awaits. Start out at Dunkin Donuts for their Community Celebration complete with face painting and more. Love on a Leash at the Carson City Library will give them a chance to practice their reading skills with a non-judgmental furry friend. Celebrate the Asian New Year with crafts and music at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Take a look at the whole list for a weekend filled with activities for those young, old, and in-between.

SATURDAY:

Carson City Library will present the 2015 film “Suffragette”, on Sunday, February 21st, at 2:30 pm, in the Library’s Digitorium. Directed by Sarah Gavron, the all-star cast, including Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, and Meryl Streep star in a powerful drama, inspired by true events, about the women willing to lose everything in their fight for the growing Suffragette movement and obtaining the right to vote. This film, rated PG-13, is free and open to the public.

Race. Family. Gender. The American Dream. These themes still resonate decades after black playwright Lorraine Hansberry first wrote “A Raisin in the Sun.” Hansberry defied convention by writing the breakthrough composition, the first play written by an African-American woman to be produced on Broadway.

The University of Nevada, Reno Department of Theatre and Dance will also be breaking new ground as it presents “A Raisin in the Sun” in March with its first predominantly African-American cast. It will be the premier of the production in Reno, as well.

This week's It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Linda Bellegray, an organizer for this year's annual Carson City International Film Weekend.

Batten down the hatches, Carson City, there’s a storm a’brewin. Feed your need for culture at the Brewery Arts Center where you’ll find Kenny Arnold’s exhibit ‘Free Your Soul.’ The Metropolitan Opera ‘Turandot’ plays live at the Galaxy Theater. Or enjoy Carson High School’s last performance of ‘And Then They Came for Me: Remembering the World of Anne Frank.’

It’s the last weekend of January: where does the time go? Head out to one of our local hot spots for some food, fun, and friends. The Brewery Arts Center is a triple threat tonight with the Carson High School play, an artist’s show and reception, and bluegrass band: the Dusty Green Bones. Enjoy Josh and Jenera at Living the Good Life while you dine, then stick around for DJ Bobby G. Wish Sassafras a happy birthday at their new location with local favorites, the Trippin King Snakes.

Welcome to Thursday, Carson City. A storm’s coming in, so go out and have some fun before the snow shows up. Sing your heart out at Living the Good Life or Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar: it’s karaoke night. The Francis Humphrey Lecture Series returns to the Nevada State Museum with some freakish phenomenon found in the Black Rock Desert. Break a leg to the talented members of the Carson High Drama class performing at the Brewery Art Center. There will be three performances of ‘And Then They Came for Me,’ so don’t miss them in action.

Film lovers won't want to miss next month's Carson City International Film Weekend. Not only will audiences enjoy award-winning international and independently made films, but the weekend showings and discussions are free.

Chaos and hilarity ensue in this hysterical spoof of several popular reality TV shows! When poor King Evian uses his last dying words (as he falls out the window) to pass royal succession not to greedy Prince Daft but to Yokel, a foolish hillbilly, everyone agrees Yokel needs a wife to help him run the kingdom.

As the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company celebrates its 25th anniversary with a long-awaited production of “Mary Poppins,” weekends, Nov. 6 through 21, the company is also reflecting on the impact it has made in Northern Nevada.

In addition to the high quality theatre that it has offered the region, many former student/performers have gone on to careers in Hollywood, on Broadway, in academia and more.

Halloween has arrived, and with it a week full of fun activities that are family friendly.

About 70 Naval Jr. ROTC students and others had the honor and privileges of listening to a World War II veteran speak at Carson High School on Thursday. Charles Sehe, now 92, was a teenaged sailor on the USS Nevada when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II.

The Junior Achievement "Be Entrepreneurial" course will be taught at Carson High School this Fall in all CHS Business classes. Bill Heitman and Ila Acchtabowski from Junior Achievement have been instrumental in making this happen.The course will be taught by professionals from Sierra Financial Advisors Sally Kaplan and Katie Coombs.  Junior Achievement is a non-profit youth organization founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, Theodore Vail, and Winthrop M. Crane.

Ready for the weekend, Carson City? Don’t miss out on the annual Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary. This event featuring crafts, games, and music is always fun. Learn about the Basque Culture at the Nevada State Museum. This month’s Family Fun Saturday features presentations and activities. Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans are hosting a free Legal Aid Fair in the Sierra Room of the Community Center for those of you with questions about civil, non-criminal, matters.

The leaves are beginning to turn, but the nice weather is still holding out. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year in Carson City. Enjoy the sunshine with Supervisor Karen Abowd; her monthly walkabout leaves the Community Center steps at noon. Party for a cause at Carson Lanes tonight: DJ Cowboy Bobby’s open dance night is raising money for a local woman with cancer. Mo’z Motley Blues returns to Living the Good Life and always kicks the weekend off right. Whiskey Tavern is where you can channel your inner diva; it’s karaoke night.

The weekend is still two days away, but there is plenty of fun to distract you from the wait. Learn the finer points of Improv tonight at the Brewery Arts Center. Chat with ‘The Ghost Lady,’ author Arlene Jenkins at Browsers Corner Book Store. Indulge in some live music at Living the Good Life or Glen Eagles. Singers should check out Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or the Feisty Goat Pub for karaoke. Dance your blues away with spicy salsa at El Charro Avita or country line dancing at Beercade.

After a few weeks dark, Jazz returns to Sassafras with hosts John and Cherie Shipley. Entertainer extraordinaire, Corky Bennett, can be found at Living the Good Life. Jump into the sud-soaked fray that is Geeks Who Drink Trivia at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company. And ladies can expect something special at the Ormsby Club and the Carson Cigar Company.

• Carson High School Homecoming Week

I think the irony of the Ashley Madison hacking story is probably what prompted me to write this article about personal privacy. While a large number of people desire to keep their personal activities secret, it is amazing to compare the “small number of Ashley Madison users” to the enormous number of us who appear to be conducting much of our lives openly on the web through Facebook and many other sites.

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated by their senior classmates as queen and king candidates: Tess Corda, Paris Regan, Kassidy Cox, Delaney Fine, Lindy Lehman, Haley Gray, Ikela Lewis, Todd Lani, Asa Carter, Conner Pradere, Joe Nelson, and Eddie Duarte.
