I'm not sure what got me thinking about cranberries. After all, cranberries are not a food item you purchase and use regularly.

Those who have attended any of the summertime Carson City Farmer’s Markets will be familiar with Tee Jay’s Indonesian Street Food, and now they’ll be able to get it year round.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ food pantries in Dayton, Yerington and Silver Springs are asking for donations of typical Thanksgiving side dish ingredients.

Juan Salazar first moved to Carson City 16 years ago to be closer to his parents who were, at the time, operating an eatery within Mo and Sluggo's.

Since then, the family has been serving up dishes throughout Carson City, first at Mo and Sluggo's (now Westside Pour House), then at the Horseshoe Club (now closed), and finally at the Comstock Casino, where they remain as Juan's Mexican Grill.

Fall has arrived in the Sierra Nevada bringing the steady change of turning leaves and a noticeable chill in the air. The fall season also means bears are actively searching for food, even down into the lower valleys.

I’m not a fan of toiling in the heat. I do very little yard work when it’s hot. Sure, I could get up at dawn and garden for a couple of hours or stay up late and work in the yard at sunset, but I rarely do. What happened is that a small group of committed beekeepers decided to approach the city with the idea, and then worked tirelessly for two years with Carson City Board of Supervisors and Mayor Bob Crowell to develop an organization committed to protecting pollinator habitat within the city boundaries.

Last week, I wrote about overwhelm and how to approach it. But, there’s one part of the process of overcoming overwhelm that will trip you up if you don’t understand it - setting priorities.

Priorities fall under a number of categories:

• Critical priority. (Example: Something that has to be done in 24 hours, often has a consequence if not done)
• The deadline is approaching. (Example: Hard deadline, no moving it, often has penalties for missing)

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Once the dishes were done from Thanksgiving dinner, shoppers kicked off the shopping weekend immediately and headed to stores and online retailers to take advantage of deals and discounts over the long weekend and Cyber Monday. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates that more than 1.7 million people spent a total of $638.9 million on gifts, decorations and other merchandise over the five-day period.

Everyone has a disability of some kind, but most learn how to cope with or overcome it; however, not everyone with a disability is aware enough to recognize whether or not they even have a physical challenge. These individuals have a severe and profound physical and neurological disability, cannot care for themselves, need full-time assistance, and are some of the kindest human beings in the world, many of whom are students in the Carson City School District and at CHS. Each year, students in the CHS Comprehensive Life Skills program make crafts to sell at the annual CHS Craft Fair and give as gifts.

Cucina Lupo, Carson City’s newest Italian restaurant, hosted its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday.

The owner, Mark Estee, is also the proprietor of several other local restaurants including Carson City’s The Union, Gardnerville’s Overland Restaurant and Pub, and Reno’s Liberty Food and Wine Exchange, as well as Chez Louie in the Nevada Museum of Art.

Cucina Lupo, Carson City’s newest modern Italian restaurant, invites residents to join them for lunch and dinner services starting Tuesday, Nov. 12. Located at 308 N. Curry Street, Cucina Lupo fills the same space the Martin Hotel recently vacated.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region Friday through Sunday to celebrate Nevada Day. Activities include the annual parade down Carson Street, a carnival at Mills Park, the 30th annual Nevada Day Classic, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, beard and rock drilling contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit kids and adults of all ages.

The Silver State celebrates its birthday this week in Carson City and will put on a statehood celebration like no other as Nevada Day comes into full swing, featuring the annual parade down Carson Street on Saturday, a carnival at Mills Park, The La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow at the MAC, activities for adults and kids, contests, delicious food dishes, pancakes, chili and plenty of beverages to suit every wild hair.

A 40-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Sunday in the 2700 block of Menlo Drive for suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon, a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy said.

Jamming into the midweek, events lined up for Wednesday, Sept. 25 around the capital city include a Carson City Chamber's Soup's On luncheon with a primer on blockchain. The Northern Nevada Development Authority will host its monthly Business Edge meeting at Casino Fandango with a focus on Nevada's energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives. Also happening: Fusion cooking classes at Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton headquarters, plus the Veterans Resource Group will make a visit to the Dayton Food Pantry. There's also a Wine and Moondance Chocolate Pairing at Expresso Yourself inside the Brewery Arts Center, plus art workshops and showings, Salsa dancing and more.

As we make our way to Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, events around the capital city include a job fair at the Carson Nugget, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs, a Fat Tuesday business networking event, Culinary Traveler’s Club at Bleu Cafe and more.

Dayton, Nev. – Stop by Healthy Communities Coalition’s headquarters at 209 Dayton Valley Road for free cooking demonstrations on September 25 and 26 anytime between 10am-2pm.

The public is warmly invited to learn more about Indian and Mexican fusion cuisine with Rupa, a passionate cooking instructor. She’ll demonstrate how to incorporate some of the ingredients at Healthy Communities’ Dayton Food Pantry into affordable and healthy dishes crackling with flavor.

Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen is heading to Lake Tahoe. The celebrated star chef and television personality will be opening the third restaurant in his chain inside the historic Sage Room at Harveys Lake Tahoe. It is planned to debut in late 2019.

If you could rename the seasons in Northern Nevada, it might go something like this. Ski Season, Construction Season, Burning Man, and Nevada Day. Burning Man season is here! Soon you will start seeing art cars, buses, RVs, bike racks galore, and those people who call themselves Burners.
