Carson City Emergency Management offers storm preparation suggestions

With a strong storm likely to hit the region on Thursday and Friday, Carson City Emergency Management is reminding citizens of importance of being prepared. It’s that time of year when winter weather can have severe impacts in Northern Nevada and we encourage everyone to get ready.

What you need to know:

Weather Service: Damaging winds expected today through early Friday for Carson City

While forecasters say the precipitation amounts with the onslaught of the approaching winter storm won’t bring historic amounts of moisture, the high winds ahead of the system may prove to be for the record books.

Carson City and Western Nevada remains under a High Wind Warning through 4 a.m. Friday morning. The winds are expected to increase this morning, with the strongest early this afternoon, lowering some late in the afternoon but will remain gusty overnight, according to the National Weather Service.

Weather Service: Damaging winds in the Sierra, Carson City area possible ahead of storm

While eyes are on the significant winter storm headed for the Sierra and Carson City region, the National Weather Service warns that winds ahead of the storm may be damaging and among the strongest we've experienced in the past two years.

Outdoors with Don Q: We're ready for winter, here and there

It's safe to say that we are now ready for winter, here at our home in Carson City and at the Quilici Cabin near Davis Lake in Plumas County, Calif. Forecasters are calling for a winter storm to blow in Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. It takes quite a bit of time and effort, but each year a whole host of activities take place at both locations in anticipation of Old Man Winter's arrival.
