White-fronted goose picked for 2015 Nevada duck stamp art contest

The Nevada Waterfowl Association has selected the greater white-fronted goose for this year’s Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest. The 2015 Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest is sanctioned by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, with the winning artwork to be featured on the 2015-2016 state stamp.

Nevada Day 2014 celebration planning underway in Carson City

Nevada’s state capitol, Carson City, will host festivities to pay tribute to the Silver State’s 150th anniversary of statehood. A full schedule of events during the Nevada Day holiday weekend will be highlighted by the original Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 1, when celebrating crowds will line the Carson Street parade route to view the floats, marching bands, horses, entertainers, public officials and celebrity guests.

Annual Powwow Celebrates Nevada's Rich, Native History

Stewart Indian School in Carson City hosts its annual Father’s Day Powwow, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, and is one of the sanctioned 150 events celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial – 150 years of statehood. Everyone is invited to experience the beauty and significance of Nevada’s Native American heritage through traditional dance competitions, music and elaborate costumes of this wonderful, rich culture.

Governor, lieutenant governor to attend Nevada Sesquicentennial third medallion first strike ceremony

On Friday, May 30, Gov. Brian Sandoval, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and Kirk Clausen from Wells Fargo, the official sponsor of the medallion program, will be joined by the Nevada 150 Commission and special guests, to strike Nevada’s third sesquicentennial silver medallion for the State’s 150th birthday celebration.

The third design, selected by elementary age students throughout Nevada, features some of the State’s most iconic landmarks including the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, the Reno Arch and Wendover Will with the Nevada Sesquicentennial logo on the back side.

Sundaes of Summer Contest Promotes Family Fun and the Food Bank of Northern Nevada

These eggs are made for dropping

More than 30 local kids participated in an egg drop competition Saturday at the Carson City Library. The contest involved creating protective packaging for an uncooked egg, which was then dropped from the roof.

Prizes were awarded for creativity and successfully protecting the egg. The month-long Discover Tech exhibit, which introduces kids to all aspects of engineering, is open through May 24 and wraps up this week with the Trebuchet catapult competition on Friday at Mills Park.

The Great Carson City Literary Festival is coming to town on the weekend of June 6-8 at Mills Park. The festival will have many family oriented and child activities including authors of every genre, a book nook with readings by the actual authors, Kid Chef Eliana who will be doing cooking demonstrations, a giant bounce house and obstacle course, a free kids art tent, food, and much more.

Carson City is going head-to-head with 63 other towns across the country in Outside Magazine's online edition of Best Towns in the country. The contest, in its fourth year, is pitting towns against towns in a readers poll.

WNC Softball: Wildcats takes tough tourney loss

Western Nevada College Wildcats softball faced the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes in the Region XVIII tournament on Friday. Both teams needed to win in order to stay in the contest for the championship, and their fight the entire game showed how important a battle it was. WNC batted first as the visiting team, and Katilyn Covione started in the circle for the Wildcats of Carson City.

2014 Carson City Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt begins today

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month, the Carson City Historic Resources Commission is holding its 5th annual Historic Preservation Scavenger Hunt beginning today, Thursday, May 1, through May 28, 2014.

The adult scavenger hunt will consist of 30 historic architectural features, all within in the historic district, and the kids scavenger hunt will consist of 20 historic features within a smaller area. The contest will run from May 1 to May 28.

Carson City high school students win big at National History Day regional competition

Ten Carson High School sophomores took home first place awards Saturday at the regional competition for National History Day at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Of the 15 entries from Nicole Fagundes’ Honors World History class, 12 received honors, including six first place entries that advance to the national competition at the University of Maryland at College Park in June.

WNC Softball: Utah's Snow College slows down Wildcat offense

There has been no scarcity of hits for the Western Nevada College softball team in recent Scenic West Athletic Conference series with Colorado Northwestern and North Idaho College.

MINDEN, Nev. (AP) - A Nevada youth soccer coach accused of striking a referee after a game has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge.

WNC Softball: North Idaho Cardinals cool down Wildcat bats, games resume Saturday

After a record-setting 22-hit performance and 14-run output in their previous game, the Western Nevada College Wildcats had difficulty finding holes in the North Idaho Cardinals’ defense on Friday.

In their first home game at Edmonds Sports Complex in more than a month, the Wildcats were two-hit by a trio of Cardinals in the opening game, losing 5-0. North Idaho, one of the hottest Scenic West Athletic Conference softball teams, rallied to win game two, restricting the Wildcats to six hits in an 8-6 victory.

WNC Baseball: Wildcats grab double header in Carson City

Western Nevada College took little time Friday afternoon to take control in the opener doubleheader of a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference series against Colorado Northwestern Community College. In just one inning, the Wildcats established a 6-0 lead and never looked back.

The nightcap brought a closer contest, but WNC held on for a 6-4 win. The victories left the Wildcats in second place as the schedule nears tournament time, while the much-improved Colorado Northwestern team still sits near the bottom of the league.

WNC Softball: Makenzie Hospodka, Covione Power Wildcats to Split with Colorado Northwestern

Katilyn Covione pitched a complete-game four-hitter and Makenzie Hospodka knocked in five runs as Western Nevada College softball team returned to the win column in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

After dropping the opening game of a doubleheader to Colorado Northwestern Community College on Friday, the Carson City based Wildcats battered the Spartans, 8-1, in game two in Rangely, Colo., to end a 16-game SWAC losing streak.
“It wasn’t just a win. I thought it was one of our best games all year,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “They played a really solid game all the way around.”

Nevada elementary students invited to choose third Sesquicentennial medallion design

Carson City, Nev. – In honor of Nevada’s 150th birthday, the Nevada Sesquicentennial Commission invites all elementary age children in Nevada to participate in choosing the design elements for the third Sesquicentennial medallion.

The medallion, third of four in the Sesquicentennial series being produced throughout the year, will feature the winning design elements as chosen by Nevada students. Votes must be submitted to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki’s office no later than Wednesday, April 30, 2014.

WNC Softball: Covione’s superlative pitching effort falls short

They did everything but secure their first Scenic West Athletic Conference softball victory in a month.
Salt Lake pushed two runs across the plate in the seventh inning to rally for a 4-3 victory over the Western Nevada College Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake City.

“To have the lead all the way and to end it like that was devastating,” said WNC coach Leah Wentworth. “I’m happy we put ourselves in position to win. We need experiences like that, and moving forward, we need to learn from it.”

WNC baseball team takes two to open series

The Western Nevada College baseball team turned turned two tight contests into victories with walk-off home runs on both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon in Carson City.

The Wildcats won 6-5 and 9-6 over Mount Hood Community College of Oregon. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at John L. Harvey Field beginning at noon.

Kit Carson Toastmasters Wins Area Speech Contests

Jim Klipp of Kit Carson Toastmasters in Carson City took top honors at both the International Speech Contest and the Table Topics Contest at the Area Level on March 8.

The International Speech Contests challenges each contestant to present their best five to seven minute speech. Each of the local clubs may select a representative to compete with the winner advancing to the next level. The finals will be held this year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
