Nevada Day 2014 celebration planning underway in Carson City
Nevada’s state capitol, Carson City, will host festivities to pay tribute to the Silver State’s 150th anniversary of statehood. A full schedule of events during the Nevada Day holiday weekend will be highlighted by the original Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 1, when celebrating crowds will line the Carson Street parade route to view the floats, marching bands, horses, entertainers, public officials and celebrity guests.
This year’s theme is “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada!” to commemorate Nevada Territory’s Battle Born entry into the union on October 31, 1864 as the 36thstate, and showcase our rich heritage of native communities, mining, ranching, and a celebration of the pioneer spirit.
“We are proud to be able to bring the 76thNevada Day Parade and related events to Carson City again this year,” says Ken Hamilton, Nevada Day, Inc. “The committee members are working hard to make this Nevada Day the best ever.”
A busy schedule of traditional and first-time events is being organized by the Nevada Day Committee, a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, which relies on the generosity of community donations and business sponsorship for the majority of its revenue.
Nevada Day celebrants can expect their favorite events during the holiday weekend, such as the Pinewood Derby, Nevada Day Beard Contest, the World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest, La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow events, many food events, and the 4th annual Governor’s Banquet (planned for the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 28); with new events being planned this year including a “Fam Fest” for parade-goers of all ages, and a very special themed ball to be held the night before the parade. More details will be publicized soon, as event venues and participating groups are secured.
Sponsorship opportunities are available this year for commercial businesses as well as “Friends” of a specific Nevada Day event, including the opportunity to sponsor the parade entry fee for a military group. Sponsorships begin at $55; the sponsorship packet is available online here.
Additionally, vendors and private parties will be able to reserve their own piece of the parade route real estate in the form of a reserved street corner to be sectioned off for their group or business on parade day. Vendor and parade applications will be available online soon by going here.
Nevada’s 150th Birthday celebration is taking place throughout the state, with Nevada Day celebration events also being undertaken on October 31stby groups in Las Vegas, Elko and Virginia City. Details of these scheduled events are listed on the NV150 Commission website, at: www.nevada150.org.
