RENO — With the fall semester officially kicking off Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, the University of Nevada, Reno is set to welcome students back to campus. The first wave of students will arrive Saturday, Aug. 18, when more than 1,700 freshmen students participating in NevadaFIT come to campus.

In the days of covered wagons, copious amounts of gold and silver, and dastardly highway bandits, the legend of the Prison Hill Missing Treasure still lives today, and people often comb the sides of Prison Hill in Carson City searching out the lost Wells Fargo gold for themselves, but it has yet to be found to this day.

Chautauquan Deke DiMarzo will portray Watchman Alex Coryell: Virginia City Police Department 1873 to 1891 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

I’m not even going to speculate on the air quality, but please use your best judgement when choosing your activities and there may be some cancellations that I am not aware of. Downtown has a full day of options, but the back roads may be a little more difficult to navigate due to construction projects. The great music that awaits will be worth the hassle. SILVER CITY, Nev. — Boys and girls ages 7-13 will build and code robots to move during an annual engineering mini-camp in Silver City on Tuesday, August 14 from 10 a.m. to noon. The free activity will be led by the Society of Women Engineers’ Sierra Nevada section, in partnership with FLL Team VC Silver Bricks and FTC team Cyber Mafia.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — A free Clinical Somatics class for adults will be offered at the Silver City School House at 385 High Street on Tuesday, August 7 from 10 to 11 a.m.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "The Wind Calls", at the Community Development Building [the Brick], 108 E. Proctor Street in Carson City.

Nine University of Nevada, Reno students have work in the art exhibit. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Friday, Sept. 7 from 5–7 p.m. The free exhibition is available to the public through Oct. 9, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

"The Wind Calls" includes work by Mahedi Anjuman, Nicki Bracco, Mark Combs, Teal Francis, Hannah Huntley, Gwaylon Leaf, Frances Melhop, Ally Messer, and Carla Miller.

A day of artwork and connection for the family! Create monoprints using different methods, including our professional etching press. Yeah, it’s hot out there, but it’s the area happenings that are sizzling. The Carson City Fair at Fuji Park offers a plethora of entertainment for all ages including tractor pulls, a carnival, and farm animals. Under the shade of the Mills Park cottonwoods, you’ll have all day to peruse the varied vehicles in the annual Run Whatcha Brung Car Show. The sun will come out tomorrow, but it’s the stars that are coming out tonight for the free Levitt Amp Concert at the Brewery Arts Center.

The Carson City Fair returns today, Wednesday with good old fashioned hometown capital city fun, including livestock showings, carnival rides and games, eating contests, dunk tanks, a Day of Service, concerts and more.

I have long found it impossible to decide which Carson City event is my favorite: forever waffling between Nevada Day and the Taste of Downtown. Seeing as the annual parade is still months away, I’m going to side with ‘The Taste’ purely for its timeliness. With over forty local eateries participating, multiple raffles at downtown shops, and seven bands rocking every corner of the event, it’s practically impossible to have a bad time. This might be the biggest happening in town, but it’s by no means the only good time: read on for all this weekend’s options.

Organizers of the Carson City Fair are looking for up to 100 volunteers for next week’s event at Fuji Park.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension presents the 2018 Carson City Fair July 25-29. The event, held at Fuji Park, 601 Old Clear Creek Road in Carson City, is put on in partnership with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), the Northern Nevada Antique Tractor and Engine Club, and others to celebrate youth and agriculture.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — United Way's annual "Tune into Kids" Fun Fair for preschoolers and their parents takes place Tuesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City town park, next to the Silver City School House/community center at 385 High Street. Silver City is located on the Comstock, 3 miles from Virginia City and 12 miles from Carson City.

Parents and their children ages 8-12 are invited to a fun class combining science and crafts on Tuesday, July 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with instructor Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension (UNCE).

Exhibits, entertainment and contests will be key features of the 2018 Carson City Fair, scheduled to open Wednesday, July 25 and run through Sunday, July 29 at Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City.

A very happy Fourth of July to everyone. Listed below is my collection of celebrations in Northern Nevada. You’ll find them listed by their start time, so read through the list for all your options. If there is not a city/town listed after the location, then the event is happening in Carson City. Carson Valley doesn’t have a fireworks celebration, but they get the day off to a great start with a fun run, bbqs, concerts, and more. Be prepared for traffic if you want to watch at the lake, and a designated driver is suggested no matter where you end up. Have a safe holiday and enjoy.

Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Virginia City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on this week so grab the kids, your friends and family, and have a great Independence Day.

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Jim Barcellos of University Nevada Cooperative Extension will offer science fun on both July 3 and July 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City School House community center. The activities are free and all children ages 8-12 and their parents are welcome to the free events. Parents are asked to stay and join in the fun and help with clean up.

Bring a lawn chair, a picnic and enjoy an evening in the Silver City Park with a blues, funk and classic rock concert by Mylo McCormick on Sunday, July 29 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Cortney Bloomer of Healthy Communities Coalition will offer a free bike safety rodeo for kids ages 5-12 on Tuesday, June 26 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Silver City basketball court, next to the town park and community center at 385 High Street.

The Dayton Farmers Market has opened for the 2018 summer season. The market takes place every Saturday through September from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 60 Second Avenue and Highway 50.

Show your support for Virginia City, Nev., by making a patriotic monetary donation to its world-class July Fourth Fireworks Show. Launching from the Silverland Inn & Suites located on E Street and sitting at 6,200 feet, it promises to be one of the region’s longest displays with visibility from nearly anywhere in town.

The Mylo McCormick Project will bring blues, funk and rock music to Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 21.

This is going to be an epic Fathers’ Day weekend. Carson City Off-Road sponsored by Epic Rides has taken over downtown with everything mountain bike and plays host to a free Music Festival in McFadden Plaza. Don’t miss Arts and Culture Day at the Nevada State Railroad Museum with unlimited rides on the Steam Train, special vendors, and more. Stewart Indian School will be a hotspot of activity with the annual Fathers’ Day PowWow underway. This is just the tip of the iceberg, read on for more fun than you’ll know what to do with.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Join a park ranger on a guided tour of the historic bull wheel, located near Incline Village. The Bull Wheel was part of the Great Incline Tramway of the Sierra, and was used for logging during the Comstock era, 1859 to 1880 in Virginia City.

The Comstock mining operations required a massive supply of wood, mostly taken from the forest surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin.

It’s going to be a breezy weekend, so you may want to rethink spending the day at the lake. Luckily, plenty of options are available just about anywhere you are. Carson City has a car show and Brewfest hitting the downtown corridor, and to the south, Minden and Gardnerville are having their party of the year: Carson Valley Days. It’s World Doll Day at the Nevada State Museum with special displays, activities, and a special performance by the local Young Chautauquans.

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — Whether it’s history, mining, museums, fine dining or a thirst-quenching drink from a local saloon, Virginia City’s Taste of the Comstock: Food, Whiskey and Single Jack Competition is a delicious rendezvous into the area's famed Wild West roots.
