CARSON CITY — The completion of the transcontinental railroad in the spring of 1869 changed America forever, dramatically reducing the time and cost for people and goods to move across country and accelerating the western expansion of the industrial revolution.

Heading into Thursday, May 9, 2019 we're looking at a few showers and partly sunny skies around Carson City. The event lineup features the RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival kickoff and family night at Mills Park, a Healthy Communities event in Silver Springs, CASA volunteer information hour workshop, an afternoon hike along the Ash Canyon trail, art demonstrations, live music and more. Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m.

What's on the outside doesn't always reflect on what's going on inside. Perceptions are just that sometimes. There's usually a lot more going than meets the eye.

And that is the case with Cafe at Adele's following the March 28 fire that swept through but was mostly contained to the laundry room area of the iconic Carson City restaurant that sits on the corner of North Carson and John Street.

On April 13-14, 2019 the Comstock Shootout Tournament was held at Pete Livermore Sports Complex in Carson City.

After 1 loss and 1 win, the Carson Futbol Club U16 Girls team "BOOM" made it into the final championship game for their age group. With a win of 2-1, BOOM earned the 2019 U16 Girls Comstock Shootout championship.

We're working our way into Thursday, April 25, 2019 and feeling the warmup around the Carson City region. CARSON CITY — It has been called the most historically important train car in existence and how it traveled over the past 150 years from the Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah to the center of a new exhibit at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is quite a tale.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is once again coordinating the collaborative efforts of federal, state and local fire services; public safety agencies; community organizations; and others to participate in Nevada Wildfire Awareness Month throughout May.

Nevada State Park staff will host an April 13 guided hike from the Rock Point Mill at Dayton State Park to the historic Donovan Mill in Silver City, Nev.

The Rock Point Mill was one of the earliest large mills in Nevada built to crush ore from the Comstock mines. The mill was destroyed by fires in 1882 and 1909, and floods also caused damage. Although the mill was rebuilt, demand lessened and it was dismantled and moved to the Donovan Mill site in Silver City in the 1920s.

Expect mostly sunshine and cloudy skies today as a weather system is expected to move into the region later tonight bringing rain showers to the lower valleys and some snow to the Sierra for the first day of Spring. CARSON CITY — When Hollywood in the first half of the 20th Century set its cameras on telling the story of the Transcontinental Railroad, the search for artifacts led it straight to Virginia City and Nevada’s historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad.

The 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Virginia City rocked, rolled and bounced Saturday among the thousands of partygoers who arrived in the famed Comstock town to celebrate a cuisine tradition of the Old West and swill some good ole' fashion Irish cheer.

St. Patrick's Day is a day to celebrate Irish heritage, excellent music, food, and of course, drinks galore. Check out the list for St. Paddy's events and other happenings throughout Carson City this weekend.

Well we're here Carson City. We're heading into March 15, the last Friday of winter 2019. While March 20 may be the first day of Spring, the weekend ahead is about the Irish and their spring. CARSON CITY — Museums from around the state will converge on the Nevada State Museum in Carson City on Tuesday, March 19 for the 2019 Nevada Museum Showcase.

Uncovering Nevada’s past is the topic for the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, March 20. Presented by Dennis Casinelli, club members will learn about artifacts that he discovered while growing up in Nevada and during his long career as a highway engineer for the Nevada Department of Transportation. He also founded Cassinelli Landscaping and Construction, which still serves Northern Nevada today.

VIRGINIA CITY, Nev. — A ton of steer testicles, literally, are headed up to the Comstock for the 28th annual Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry and St. Patrick’s Day Parade, March 16. Each year, daring cooks from around the region cook, fry, grill, smoke or otherwise serve up tasty testicle concoctions at this fan-favorite event, an ode to the mining town’s history.

Lyon County road crews continue to address flash flooding and snow removal on Thursday. Currently the retention basin at the area of Dayton Valley Road and Sutro is filling and may overflow by Thursday afternoon, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

Eleven months ago, Charlie and Karen Abowd announced that they would be putting their restaurant, Cafe at Adele's, and the historic Mansard-roofed, Comstock Lode-era Victorian home it is situated in at 1112 N. Carson Street, up for sale.

Most people forget that divorce wasn’t an easy thing to achieve up until the last part of the 20th century. So how is it that Reno, a tiny little railroad town in the middle of nowhere, became known as the place to flock to if you wanted to untie that knot?

Wow, Carson City! Is it Friday already?! Indeed, we have reached the end of another work week.

Go for a swim during lunch or after work at the newly reopened Carson Aquatic Center before catching some live entertainment this evening at Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro-Lounge, Bella Vita Bistro and A to Zen, featuring its weekly Open Mic Night.

People, even Nevadans themselves, often ask why Carson City is our beloved capital. It does seem odd, when you look at the “City,” half rural, half town. Reno has more than double our population, and Las Vegas even more. During the Comstock Boom, Virginia City was arguably the largest, most profitable city in the state.

So how did little Carson City become the central legislative hub of Nevada?

This is an official fundraiser for the Historical Society of Dayton Valley to help preserve history in the Dayton Valley and surrounding Comstock area.
