Column: What 2019 means to history

While no one can truly know the future, the year 2019 is going to be full of notable anniversaries commemorating events significant to history. Some we celebrate, others we mourn or memorialize. Some are remembered fondly, others with grief.

Here is a look at some of the more profound anniversaries we will observe this year:

Nevada Lore Series: the Haunting of the Gold Hill Hotel, Nevada's Oldest Hotel

The Historic Gold Hill Hotel — the oldest Hotel in Nevada, first known as the Riesen House — can be found on the road to Virginia City from Highway 50, and is a popular location for weddings and events.

Nevada State Museum to celebrate sesquicentennial arrival of coin press to Carson City

SILVER CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s recognition of the importance of arts and culture to a thriving community is very much in line with that of nearby Silver City. The Comstock town is known as an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center" due to the work residents have contributed in the fields of arts and cultural resources.

There will be a Holiday Craft Fair at Comstock Mobile Village 2601 E. College Parkway, Carson City, across the street from The Carson City Airport. The craft fair is Friday, Nov. 2, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nevada Lore Series: The haunting of Carson City’s famed Bliss Mansion

The Bliss Mansion, which still stands today directly across from the Governor’s mansion, was built by millionaire Duane L. Bliss in 1879 and was the most lavish and elaborate home built in Carson City at the time. Some say its dutiful owner still walks the grounds, keeping an eye on his beloved masterpiece.

American Flat remembered at Saturday film, photo show and lecture

SILVER CITY, Nev. — There will be a free event called “Remembering American Flat” this Saturday on the Comstock. The event includes three parts – a screening of a new documentary that covers the history of the American Flat mill from its inception in the 1920s to its demolition in 2014; a short lecture about the unique qualities of the mill by consulting architectural historian and industrial archaeologist Ron Reno, PhD; and a pop-up show with locals’ rare photos of the site.

Nevada Lore Series: The murder of Julia Bulette, Virginia City’s beloved Madam and Firefighter

Juliette “Julia” Bulette was born in England in 1832 and quickly became the proprietor of the most lavish and prosperous brothel in Virginia City. She was beloved by all, and became an honorary member of the Virginia Engine Company Number 1 fire brigade.

A rummage sale to benefit Silver City Arts will begin at 9 a.m. and an afternoon and evening of live music will run 3 to 8 p.m. Starting at 2:30 beer, wine and soda will be for sale to benefit the Silver City School House and future music events.
