Carson City Fair returns for 2018 with some changes
The annual Carson City Fair — a combination of carnival, agriculture, local exhibits and entertainment — is returning to the Nevada state capital July 25-29, 2018 at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds.
Some changes are being made for this year's fair, said Carson City Fair Coordinator Lindsay Chichester, Ph.D., an educator with the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
"We are moving all of the youth livestock east to utilize the existing barns (near the rodeo arena)," she said. "The livestock shows will actually take place on the grass south of the exhibit building."
Show rings will be covered with tents, a cost funded through a grant from the Redevelopment Authority of Carson City, Chichester said.
Arrowhead Livestock, a local 4-H Club, is actively seeking donations in the community to pay for awards in the youth livestock show, she said.
"They will have great prizes this year, and that will be fun to reward all of the hard work with," Chichester said.
Live, on-stage musical entertainment will be featured at the arena in lieu of a rodeo event this year, she said.
"Friday night will be Journey Unlimited and Saturday night will be David John and the Comstock Cowboys," she said. "We are almost ready to release tickets, but I think people will find them reasonably priced and we encourage the whole family to come."
Packaged deals for families and to attend both shows will be offered, she said.
Carnival rides, sponsored by the Nevada Rural Counties Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), will continue to be a feature of the fair at Fuji Park, Chichester said, although it will be smaller than in years past.
"We will have a small carnival, but will include rides for all ages," she said.
Antique tractors will be on display, too, along with a car and truck show.
On the last day of the fair, Sunday, July 29, RSVP is also sponsoring a competition-sanctioned chili cook-off event, Chichester said.
Saturday, July 28, will be Safety Day at the Carson City Fair, she said. Running from 9 a.m. to noon, the event is free and open to the whole family.
"The first 300 youth will get a free t-shirt," Chichester said.
Later that afternoon the fair features the Day of Service once again, she said.
"Any non-profit or educational agencies interested in having a booth should reach out to Anita Moreno at RSVP," Chichester said.
The mobile blood bus is expected to be on site Saturday as well, she said, for people who want to give blood.
Other fun activities planned for this year's Carson City Fair include eating contests and dunk tanks, Chichester said.
"Any group interested in this can reach out to me," she said. "We do want to coordinate this on our end so we can create a master list of what is happening and when."
Fair organizers are partnering again this year with Wal-mart on Topsy Lane and Jump Around Carson (JAC) to provide parking and shuttle services to fair-goers, Chichester said.
The Carson City Fair is a community event, she said, and takes a community effort to bring it to life.
"We work hard year-round to bring this event to the community," Chichester said. "Any support, whether it be financial, in-kind, or items for the silent auction is appreciated."
The fair book is already out, she said, available on the Carson City Fair web site and Facebook page.
"We encourage everyone to take a look at our static classes as there should be something for everyone," Chichester said.
