Letter to Mayor, Dear Mayor Crowell: I am the Carson City Chapter President of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada. The group is dedicated to issues important to senior citizens and is active in monitoring actions both statewide and nationally that concern the status of Social Security and pension. I would like to make you aware of recent events that are of concern to my group.

Pre-caucus caffeine with congressional candidate Patricia Ackerman. It's a big day! An important day. Patricia will be at Comma Coffee this Saturday, from 9-10 am to offer help in navigating how the caucus works and answer questions about the caucus or just come meet Patricia, the woman fighting to be your next congresswoman.

We’ve got a bunch of great events in the region through the weekend, so check below!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

A new Yogurt Beach location, which offers endless combinations of mix-and-match frozen yogurt and toppings, is opening up on Highway 50 East near the Dutch Bros. coffee stall and Port of Subs.

This is the second location in Carson City, with the first located at 3228 N Carson St., with locations in Gardnerville, Reno and Sparks. The new Highway 50 East location opened Thursday morning.

Congressional candidate Patricia Ackerman will be at Mom & Pops Diner, 224 S Carson St., in Carson City on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 to 10 a.m. Meet, talk and have a cup of coffee with Patricia. All Nevada residents are invited to attend and bring your thoughts, ideas, and concerns to share.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will host “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 8 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant. All Carson City residents are invited to attend to share ideas and concerns about issues facing the city.

CARSON CITY — Time for golf! The Silver Oak Senior Men’s Golf Club has officially teed it up for the 2020 golf season. SOSMGC is open to golfers 55 years of age and older and all handicap levels. Dues are $80 which includes your membership and handicap posting in the Northern Nevada Golf Association GHIN service.

Heading into the middle of the work week and the final three of January, the capital city can expect a slight cool down weather wise with some sunshine and clouds. Events Wednesday include art showings, music, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

RHI Powder, a Carson City based company, announces the completion of the installation of its newest large scale burn off oven.

DAYTON, Nev. — The Dayton Chili Cookers are partnering with Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry for their annual chili cookoff, silent auction, and raffle to benefit the Pantry. Organizers say the community made this event a big success last year, when more than $3,700 was raised, and they are excited to see the turn out this year.


How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? For that matter, how many adults say they are going to write a book one day, paint like Michelangelo, or seek discomfort, my own personal new year’s resolution, by learning something new, performing selfless endeavors, or fulfilling an item on their bucket list?

Happy Saturday Carson City! We have a bunch of great events going on in the region throughout the weekend, so check below to see what’s happening!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Combined with live music at Bella Vita Bistro, there’s plenty to do and see around the state capitol. Read on for more.

The Human Bean coffee franchise opened their drive-thru coffee stand in Ashland, Oregon in 1998. Since then, they’ve opened nearly 100 further locations in ten states, and Carson City has now received their own.

Matt Parent of Carson City and Shawn Dixon of Reno have been friends since high school and both have been avid hunters their entire lives. So when Parent called Dixon to ask him to come look for a particular deer in Carson City last weekend, Dixon was more than happy to drive down.

However, this was no ordinary deer hunt, but instead, a deer rescue.

Heading into the first weekend of 2020, there are several activities around the Carson City region lined over the next three days. Events include the Winter Round Up Run at Centennial Park, the Carson City Library 2020 Winter Reading Challenge, plus you can take a post-New Year's stroll while the weather is nice during Saturday's Downtown Carson City Wine Walk. Red wriggler worms are decomposing work horses. They eat paper and food scraps turning them into compost, a nutrient-rich material for plants.

I asked Cory at The Greenhouse Project to share a worm composting method. He suggests a 3-bin method, starting with plastic bins approximately 1-1/2 feet by 2-1/2 feet. The boxes are shallow, because worms are surface-dwellers and prefer to live in the top six inches of bedding material.

Clouds will roll into the capital city region Tuesday keeping temperatures quite chilly. Happenings around town include organized morning and evening fitness walks, a "Stuff the Bus Toy Drive" at Capital Ford, a Planning Commission meeting on the proposed Andersen Ranch development and a Posada event at Mark Twain Elementary. Plus, the Carson City School Orchestra Program will hold its annual Holiday Concert at the community center, The Peanuts Gang Trio will hold a free holiday concert at Sassafras, and more.

Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

Where does the time go? Everyone has heard this a thousand times, but people still need to be reminded of the question anyway because everyone, regardless of what they believe, needs to stop and take a moment to enjoy the moment.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. The Polar Express Train Rides are sold out for the rest of the year, but Santa Train express rides are steaming up at the Nevada State Railroad Museum over the weekend. Read on for details.

On Saturday, Dec. 14, Linda Ritter, artist and owner of Pinyon Pottery, will demonstrate the art of pottery making between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. bringing in her pottery wheel to the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, 1900 S. Carson Street. Many of her art pieces will be on display and for sale, just in time for the holidays.

Partly sunny skies and a daytime high in the mid-40s looks to be the order of the day around the capital city as we roll into Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. Happenings around town include a book presentation by urban fantasy author SM Reine at the Nevada State Library and Archives, a morning fitness walk and evening hike, dance classes, a meeting of the CCSD board, plus festive December music and more with Night Lights Holiday Jazz and Poetry at Carson City's Comma Coffee. The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.
