Senior Group 'pushed-out' of Senior Center (letter)

Letter to Mayor, Dear Mayor Crowell: I am the Carson City Chapter President of the Retired Public Employees of Nevada. The group is dedicated to issues important to senior citizens and is active in monitoring actions both statewide and nationally that concern the status of Social Security and pension. Cab Calloway Orchestra, Feast of Chocolate, Artsy Fartsy jewelry show and more: Carson City region readies for weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

Second Yogurt Beach in Carson City opens near Dutch Bros on Highway 50 E Thursday

A new Yogurt Beach location, which offers endless combinations of mix-and-match frozen yogurt and toppings, is opening up on Highway 50 East near the Dutch Bros. coffee stall and Port of Subs.

This is the second location in Carson City, with the first located at 3228 N Carson St., with locations in Gardnerville, Reno and Sparks. The new Highway 50 East location opened Thursday morning.

Silver Oak Senior Men's 2020 golf season registration underway

CARSON CITY — Time for golf! The Silver Oak Senior Men’s Golf Club has officially teed it up for the 2020 golf season. SOSMGC is open to golfers 55 years of age and older and all handicap levels. Dues are $80 which includes your membership and handicap posting in the Northern Nevada Golf Association GHIN service.

Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell delivers his last ‘State of the City’ address

During the annual “State of the City” address Friday at Gold Dust West, Carson City’s Mayor Bob Crowell gave his last speech of its kind, as he is retiring at the end of this year.

The State of the City address is a way community members can be kept up to date on everything going on in our capital city, including achievements, challenges, and everything in between.

Updates included achievements such as the completion of the water pipeline from Douglas County to Carson City, the Complete Streets Project, Tesla’s grant for the Carson City School District, the first new park opening in 12 years, the opening of the Disc Golf course, and more.

DAYTON, Nev. — The Dayton Chili Cookers are partnering with Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry for their annual chili cookoff, silent auction, and raffle to benefit the Pantry. Organizers say the community made this event a big success last year, when more than $3,700 was raised, and they are excited to see the turn out this year.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the Nevada Artists Association New Year’s Show, and there’s a historical Curry family presentation at the Nevada State Museum. Famed country rock band I See Hawks in L.A. perform at the Historic Silver City Schoolhouse on Saturday. Combined with live music at Bella Vita Bistro, there’s plenty to do and see around the state capitol. Read on for more.

'Human Bean' coffee shop opens first location in Carson City

The Human Bean coffee franchise opened their drive-thru coffee stand in Ashland, Oregon in 1998. Since then, they’ve opened nearly 100 further locations in ten states, and Carson City has now received their own.

Deer hunters save 'King of Carson,' Carson City's famous buck, from tussle with clothesline

Matt Parent of Carson City and Shawn Dixon of Reno have been friends since high school and both have been avid hunters their entire lives. So when Parent called Dixon to ask him to come look for a particular deer in Carson City last weekend, Dixon was more than happy to drive down.

However, this was no ordinary deer hunt, but instead, a deer rescue.

JoAnne Skelly column: Worm composting in the house or garage

Red wriggler worms are decomposing work horses. They eat paper and food scraps turning them into compost, a nutrient-rich material for plants.

I asked Cory at The Greenhouse Project to share a worm composting method. He suggests a 3-bin method, starting with plastic bins approximately 1-1/2 feet by 2-1/2 feet. The boxes are shallow, because worms are surface-dwellers and prefer to live in the top six inches of bedding material.

Events include the KTVN Share Your Christmas Food Drive at the Governor's Mansion in Carson City and at Minden's Carson Valley Inn, Homestead Holidays at the Silver Saddle Ranch and more. Holiday pottery art demonstration, show Saturday at Carson City Chamber

The Orchestra Program of Carson City School District is holding its Holiday Concert Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Just the idea of a concert in Carson City is exciting enough, but it gets even better because this musical event will cost audiences absolutely nothing except a little time and effort getting there. Admission is free.
