Hello fellow anglers, happy Independence Day to you all. There will be a lot of people out and about this weekend. If you are headed out to do some fishing this weekend, I have the place.  Number one on the list this week is Caples Lake. This is what they offer, bed and breakfast rooms, cabins on the lake, general store, 12-14 foot fishing boat, kayaks or canoe rentals.

Here is the fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, northern California and the Sierra for the July 4 holiday weekend. Saturday, July 5 is free fishing day in California, which means anyone can fish without a license.

The DeGolyer Buckin’ Horse and Bull Bash allows onlookers to get up close and personal with hooves and horns at the Churchill County Fairgrounds June 27-28. This family friendly event offers five great rodeo events, nightly concerts, military appreciation, local vendors and a special tribute to fallen cowboys and cowgirls.

UPDATE: Get it while it's hot this Saturday and Sunday in Carson City. The Honor Flight Nevada program and Glen Eagles will host the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair this weekend.

International Chili Society chefs will compete for a chance to go to the World Cook-Off in Las Vegas. The public is invited to sample red and verde chili as well as salsas. Tasting kits are $3 each. The "People's Choice" Chili award will be determined by the vote collected by everyone who samples.

Hello fellow anglers, winter came back and stirred up the fishing. I now think that is behind us, for at least a week or so. This time of year never trust Mother Nature and always be prepared. I have been caught off guard back in the high country as well as an overnighter at Indian Creek Reservoir.

With July just around the corner, unless something dramatic and unforeseen happens in the future, 2014 has all the earmarks of being a very poor fishing summer because of our ongoing drought.

Our sparse Sierra Nevada snowpack from last winter is gone, the spring run-off was almost non-existent, and that is bad news for fishing this summer in our streams, creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.

Irene Davison, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Forest Service, has been named Carson District Ranger of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

"Davison will be a tremendous addition to the Carson Ranger District,” said Bill Dunkelberger, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest Supervisor. “She has an extensive resources management background, and is no stranger to tackling tough resource challenges in both rural and urban recreational areas.”

She began her duties June 2. The 368,3600-acre district straddles western Nevada and Eastern California.

Hello fellow anglers. The weather is hot and the fishing action is catching up. Last week Renee and I took a few days to fish Alpine County. We camped at Indian Creek and ventured out to neighboring areas.

The action good and bad will be revealed in your local fishing report. The best fishing I have to tell you about though, was when I was not fishing at all. We came back late Saturday evening to make sure to be rested for the following day's event.

Stewart Indian School in Carson City hosts its annual Father’s Day Powwow, Friday, June 13 through Sunday, June 15, and is one of the sanctioned 150 events celebrating Nevada’s Sesquicentennial – 150 years of statehood. Memorial Day weekend is nearly here, the weather is forecast to be gorgeous and for countless folks in this general area, it will be their first big outdoor adventure of 2014.

So where to go on that weekend? Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

Hello fellow anglers. There is less than four days to go before the California fishing season officially opens. When the sun comes up on April 26, 2014 there will be a lot of casting going on.

I urge every angler who has purchased a sport fishing license to also pick up a copy of the fishing regulations. The game wardens will be out checking to make sure that we all follow the regulations.

Lyon County, Nevada was the fastest-growing county in the United States prior to the 2008 economic collapse took one of the biggest hits statewide in the foreclosure crisis. The state overall was one of the hardest hit nationally and the housing market is still in recovery.
A glimmer of hope was seen in 2013, as home values headed up while foreclosure rates headed down, according to a report from the Lied Institute for Real Estate Studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can easily run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River which begins at Lake Tahoe.

The Nevada Division of State Parks will hold a Feb. 27 workshop in Carson City to solicit comments on proposed regulations involving group camping fees and entrances fees for photographers with commercial photography permits.

The workshop will be from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Parks conference room of the Division Headquarters, 901 S. Stewart Street, Carson City.
