BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF:

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800) 720-ODWF www.dfw.state.or.us.com reported: Low and clear. Steelhead are throughout the system. Anglers fishing smaller baits and lighter line are doing the best.  Boat and bank angling pressure is light.

On a sunny afternoon, 15 workers are waist deep in a half-acre pond, tromping through 46-degree water and dragging a 120-foot net to catch several hundred small fish.

The fingerling yellow perch are being pulled from the water to be part of studies of the small fish, which is being introduced as an alternate commercial species in Alabama.

Column: 2011 fishing seasons open February 12 in Lyon County

This Saturday, Feb. 12, is the opening day of the 2011 fishing seasons for the following waters in Lyon County:

— The Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds, near Wabuska.
— Applicable open waters (Bass Pond, Beaver Slough, Crappie Pond, Hinkson Slough, North Pond and the Walker River), all on the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area (MVWMA), near Yerington.

All of the waters listed above will close on Sept. 30. If you are interested in fishing at any of those waters on Opening Day, here is some miscellaneous information:

Christmas Carol Play-Along at Carson Mall

A Christmas Carol play-along will be held on Monday, Dec. 20, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Carson Mall.
The play-along is open to all string players (violin, viola, cello, bass). Check in is at 10:30 a.m. Bring your own music stand, and dress in Christmas attire. Free admission includes cookies and punch afterward. Call Sue Jesch for reservations and sheet music at (775) 450-5584.

HOLIDAY HARMONIES

Don’t miss the “Holiday Harmonies” an offering of Christmas music presented by the Chorus of Comstock, a four part a cappella barbershop style chorus. This local chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society was deemed “Plateau A Champion” at the spring NE Division Chorus contest. Under direction of B.J. Hill, bass for international quartet competition bronze medal winner “Special Feature”, the chorus will present an array of carols and songs of the season.

Enjoy an evening of great music with Frobeck tonight at Brewery Arts Center

Music fans in Carson City will get a treat Friday night when pop, funk and rock musicians Frobeck take the stage at the Brewery Arts Center.

Coin Show Quartet featured at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City

A free concert by the Coin Show Quartet will be held at the Nevada State Museum, 600 North Carson Street, to celebrate the Carson City Mint Coin Show.

Big weekend in Carson City for jazz fans

Jazz Carson City 2010 will wind up this weekend with a Friday night appetizer followed by a Saturday and Sunday blowout.

It’s all under the umbrella of the Mile High Jazz Band, which offers a five-singer tribute to Count Basie Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m. at the 3rd Street site.

The Jazz! Carson City concert series continues today, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Adele's Restaurant and Lounge on the veranda, 1112 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Tonight the featured performer is Barbara Baxter. She will perform jazz, standards and blues. Her backup includes Peter Supersano on keyboard and Phil Jerome on bass.

The summer sizzles and Sunday is no exception with Jazz! Carson City. The Mile High Jazz Band Association, Carson City, local businesses, and jazz lovers proudly continue the annual August jazz festival that began in 2004. Admission is free, and parking at the garage on Stewart and Fifth streets is also free. Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy the music.

Music, poetry and jazz concerts through the weekend in Carson City region

There's lots of music and entertainment lined up for the weekend, not all in Carson City but certainly nearby. And, of course, the Jazz! Carson City festival continues.
Here's what you'll find this weekend:

— Genoa hosts The Old Time Music Festival in the Town Park Saturday. This is labeled as a celebration of American Roots Music and includes the Quake City Jug Band and banjo star Georgette Hall with her daughter Cecilia Yale. Breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11. Tickets are $5.
