WNC's Western Nevada Musical Theatre recognized as launchpad to professional careers

As the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company celebrates its 25th anniversary with a long-awaited production of “Mary Poppins,” weekends, Nov. 6 through 21, the company is also reflecting on the impact it has made in Northern Nevada.

In addition to the high quality theatre that it has offered the region, many former student/performers have gone on to careers in Hollywood, on Broadway, in academia and more.

Youth speakers sought for TEDx Carson City

As the curator of TEDx Carson City, which is coming to the Brewery Arts Center on April 8, Gina Hill wants to include diverse, fresh voices.

“The great ideas throughout history are brought about by the new generation,” she said. “We wanted to give them a special opportunity to share their ideas.”

Senator Square: Laptops for Everyone

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

The Dog Days of Summer have hit town, so grab your favorite four-legged friend and have fun. CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Carson High School has been back for three weeks and I think we are finally getting settled into new schedules, rekindling friendships, and getting acquainted with new teachers and students. However, our school year started with much sadness as our high school community lost one of our students in a tragic accident at Lake Tahoe.

Are you off to the playa? If not, head over to the Carson City Airport for their display of vintage aircraft celebrating the end of WWII. If land-based vehicles are your passion, then the Ferrari Hill Climb along the truck route to Virginia City could be for you. If the Ferraris are too fast, maybe you’d enjoy watching or racing with Carson City BMX at the Livermore Sports Complex off Edmonds Street. For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

Senator Square: Solutions program aims to help students with academic tutoring

Carson High School’s 21st Century Learning Center grant is expanding this year to include support labs open to all students. These labs, which run Tuesday-Thursday from 2-4 p.m., will include tutoring in English, math and science, as well as tutoring targeted to struggling freshmen and sophomores.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

The end of August already: how did that happen? This summer seems to have flown by. I guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun. Those of you gearing up for Burning Man have just a few last days to prepare for the playa. And those headed to Western Nevada College have this one last weekend before it’s time to hit the books. Mary Poppins’ auditions coming in August; Talented hopefuls advised to prepare now

Are you ready for a high-flying adventure? Then join the Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company in auditions for the Broadway blockbuster, Mary Poppins. Try-outs for the November production are slated for early August.

The wine walk is on the top of the weekend to-do list for many of you, but Carson City has a lot more going on. Ascent Runs is hosting a 5/10K and a half marathon at C-Hill on Saturday. You can register at the race, just make sure you aren’t late. Youth Football season has arrived with sign-ups for SYFL and Pop Warner on Saturday. Cheer on the Western Nevada College Wildcats as their Baseball and Softball teams battle against Salt Lake City Community College.

'Idol' fantasy over for Carson City singer but not the dream

Molly Seals' attempt to be the next American Idol ended Wednesday, but not her love of singing.
The 22-year-old Carson City cosmetologist was cut from the "American Idol" competition on Wednesday's program, during the group singing auditions, but she already has several singing performances scheduled.

Hollywood Bound: Carson City's Molly Seals advances in 'American Idol'

Molly Seals is moving on to Hollywood. The 22-year-old Carson City singer didn't get much screen time during the auditions show Wednesday night on the Fox talent program, but she did catch a golden ticket that took her to the Hollywood auditions. Seals and her mother Marianne were shown on screen for only a brief scene.

Did she make it? "American Idol" viewers can find out tonight if Carson City singer Molly Seals gets to go to Hollywood for the next stage of the competition. The program airs at 8 p.m. on Fox 11, featuring auditions held in Kansas City, Mo.

This Thursday is both National Strawberry Ice Cream Day and National Hat Day. You may want some ice cream for your vocal cords after you hit the Karaoke circuit; Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar, Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge, and the Feisty Goat Pub all want to see you wearing your performing hat tonight. On a more local level, today also brings the annual State of the State address delivered by our Governor, Brian Sandoval.

Will she make it? 'Idol' features Carson City singer

Molly Seals knows, but she's not telling. The Carson City singer knows if she made it through the early auditions for the 2015 season of the "American Idol" television singing competition, but the rest of us have to tune in to the upcoming audition episodes of the program to find out what happened.

So far, Seals, 22, can tell people that she made it through the Reno tryouts in July and moved onto the Kansas City auditions in August.

Wild Horse Children's Theater holding auditions for spring productions

Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday and Sunday.
