Carson City teacher on administrative leave for alleged racially insensitive remarks during history lesson
An Eagle Valley Middle School teacher has been placed on administrative leave after a student accused him of making racially insensitive comments.
The 13-year-old EVMS eighth grader said that on Nov. 20, her teacher made racial statements of non-white students and Native students in history class.
The student said the statements were that Native students can't learn and that's why they live on reservations.
It is unknown of the context in which the alleged statements were made. The teen said the statements were made in her third period history class. The school district, in a statement, said the alleged comments were made during a class lesson.
On Monday, several Native Indian demonstrators were outside the school district's administrative office.
Led by American Indian Movement of Northern Nevada Ray Bacasegua Valdez, and AIM vice president Rock Boice Sr., the rally was meant to call attention to the allegations and for the school district to take action.
"We're here to support the family and ask for accountability from the district for the systemic racism," said Valdez.
The school district issued the following statement:
"Administrators were made aware that an Eagle Valley Middle School teacher allegedly made discriminatory comments during a class lesson Friday, Nov. 20. The district is committed to providing a working and learning environment that is free from unlawful discrimination and harassment and opposes any statements or actions considered as discriminatory. The necessary steps are being taken to fully investigate the allegations. The teacher has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation."
