Smoke and haze from Caples Fire builds around Carson City region
The smoke and haze building around the Carson City region is due to the Caples Fire burning in the Eldorado National Forest. As of Sunday the fire had burned more than 2800 acres and was 35 percent contained.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, some increase in winds aloft is helping to push smoke and haze from the fire to an area from south of South Lake Tahoe into southern Douglas and central Lyon counties.
The fire, which began as a controlled burn that turned into a wildfire Thursday, is on the Eldorado National Forest 3 miles west of Kirkwood, California and 15 miles southwest of the south shore of Lake Tahoe.
Air quality in Carson City, Reno-Sparks and Gardnerville areas was in the moderate range Sunday afternoon, according to airnow.gov. Moderate means air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
