As the weather cools, motorists can expect more deer on city streets
Fall is returning to the area and as the days and nights become cooler, many deer are being seen around Carson City. This brings another challenge to drivers who typically do not see them on the city streets. As they forage for food and water, they cross yards and roadways in their search.
As you drive around the city be aware that they may dart out in front of you when you least expect it. With this in mind, pay attention to the speed limits and drive very carefully in areas where visibility is limited by trees and bushes.
Should you see deer in the roadway ahead of you, turn on your hazard lights so as to warn other motorists. Slow down as a lower speed increases your reaction time. A few seconds can make the difference in avoiding a collision.
Avoid swerving as you may lose control of the vehicle and collide with another object. If you see deer alongside the road, highway or city street, remember that they are unpredictable and you should not assume that they will remain where they are until you pass.
If you see one deer, chances are there are more nearby. Watch for movement on both sides of the road as deer tend to be well camouflaged especially when there is tall grass, bushes, brush, or low tree branches.
When on darkened streets, use your high beams when it is safe to do so.
This will increase your chances of spotting deer along your path. Many deer have been seen crossing Carson Street but, not all of them use the crosswalks so please drive carefully.
