Nevada Guard to remember 2011 IHOP shooting victims Sunday with run, memorial plaque
The Nevada Guard is set to host its ninth annual memorial run/walk on Sunday, Sept. 6, to commemorate the victims of the International House of Pancakes shooting that occurred in 2011. The run/walk will start at what used to be the Carson City IHOP, 3883 S. Carson St., at 7 a.m. Sunday.
This year's event will also commemorate the ninth anniversary of the shooting with the unveiling of a memorial plaque. The IHOP in Carson City was demolished last year and replaced with a Chase Bank building.
The memorial plaque is located near the parking lot of the bank, which is set to open its doors next month. Those attending are asked to maintain social distance and state COVID-19 directives.
Dozens of Guardsmen and citizens including Nevada National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Ondra Berry and Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong will be among those participating in the 5-kilometer run/walk from the corner of Carson Street and Eagle Station Lane to the Office of the Adjutant General complex at 2460 Fairview Drive.
Everyone is welcome to join the free, non-competitive run/walk.

shooting

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting rampage. Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, was also killed during the incident. All three of the Soldiers worked at the Office of the Adjutant General on Fairview Drive in Carson City.
Lt. Col. Laura Boldry, an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard, is one of the organizers of the event and said the run/walk remains a fitting way to remember the three Guardsmen and Donovan-Gunderson.
"I first organized the run because I felt it would be a way to bring their spirits — at least symbolically — back to the Office of the Adjutant General and home because they didn't make it back that day," Boldry said. "We will all be running to bring them home on Sunday."
