History Teacher of the Year tours Nevada State Prison site in Carson City
Ashley Hogan of Dayton, Nevada’s 2015 History Teacher of the Year, toured the old Nevada State Prison on Wednesday with her husband, Kelly, also a history teacher, courtesy of the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society.
“What better place to learn about early American and Nevada history than from a place that predated statehood by two years as did NSP,” said Tom Porada, a Society board member.
Ashley, who was surprised how much she learned about history in her own back yard, said the tour could help older students better appreciate the scope of what can be found within the walls of NSP.
Hogan, a 6th grade teacher at Dayton Elementary School, was awarded the State of Nevada History Teacher of the Year in May of this year from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Go here for the story.
NSPPS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of NSP and can be reached at 775-297-0240, through its website at www.nspps.org or via email at info@nspps.org. Group tours will be considered.
