A Humbling Experience
Yesterday was a bright sunny day in the beautiful city of San Francisco. I went to the Giants game with a press pass in my hand, excited for my chance to cover a Major League Baseball game. Little did I know that this day was going to be a humbling experience for me.
As most people know, I am a play-by-play announcer for the Western Nevada College Wildcats baseball program, so I was excited about the opportunity to meet the broadcasters for the Giants. I met both Dave Fleming and Jon Miller, both great guys who I was able to talk with for a short time. I also met Thom Brennaman, who is a Cincinnati Reds broadcaster but does games for the FOX network on Saturdays as well. As I talked with all three of them, I realized that I truly belong in a broadcast booth. We all had a lot in common, and they gave me great advice. I also realized how much hard work it takes to get there, and how close I am to being there. It's so close I can taste it, and there is no way I'm stopping until I have it. Being at the ballpark truly is my sanctuary, and yesterday I felt at peace as I sat in the press box. The only thing that would have made it better: A microphone in front of me.
The Giants had a 'Legends Game' yesterday before the actual game. That was just amazing to see and meet all of the great Giants of the past: JT Snow, Will Clark, Bill Mueller, Jeff Kent, Jeffery Leonard, Mike McCormick, Gaylord Perry, Shawn Dunston,Shawn Estes, and more. I definitely learned from the players to cherish the game and embrace it. No, none of them told me this; but being on the field with them, talking with them, and seeing them made me realize how great of a game baseball really is. It truly was a humbling day for me.
