Carson City Clerk’s and Nevada Secretary of State’s offices issue joint statement regarding mail-in ballot mishap
In light of COVID-19 health concerns, Nevada’s June 9, 2020 primary election will be by mail-in ballot. The Carson City Clerk-Recorder contracted with one of the largest specialty ballot printers in the country, K&H Election Services, to print, assemble and mail the mail-in ballot packages.
On Friday, May 1, 2020, Carson City voters began receiving their mail-in ballots. Shortly after, the Nevada Secretary of State and Carson City Clerk’s office were informed that a small percentage of voters in Carson City had received a return envelope within their ballot mail package that was addressed to a neighboring Nevada county, the Lyon County Clerk/Treasurer, rather than the Carson City Clerk-Recorder.
The print vendor was contacted immediately, and appropriate steps have already been taken to contact affected voters in a coordinated effort to replace the incorrect envelopes so that voters have ample time to complete and return their ballots.
Voters who have received the incorrect envelope will receive a letter from the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s office along with the correct ballot return envelope. The error is attributed to the inadvertent commingling of Lyon County ballot return envelopes with Carson City ballot return envelopes by the vendor. All other documents within the ballot packet are correct. If voters have questions about their ballots, they may contact the Carson City Clerk’s office. The issue only applies to the address printed on very few ballot return envelopes.
The Carson City Clerk, Lyon County Clerk and Secretary of State’s office are working together so that even if a voter were to return a ballot using the incorrect ballot return envelope, the ballot will still be securely received and transmitted to the Carson City Clerk. The ballot printing vendor has acknowledged the error and will soon be sending affected voters the correct ballot return envelope.
