More snow for Carson City today; another 2 to 4 feet expected for Sierra
Another winter storm system is poised to hit the Carson City area today, with rain turning to snow later this afternoon.
A winter weather advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Reno areas, with a winter storm warning in effect through 11 a.m. Friday for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra.
Up to four inches of snow may fall in Carson City through early Friday morning, with up to six inches in the foothills, according to CarsonWeather.com. The Sierra could see anywhere between 2 to 4 feet above 7,000 feet from this system. Lake level Tahoe could see anywhere between 10 to 20 inches, and possibly up to 2 feet in areas west of Highway 89, according to the weather service.
Travel will likely be difficult along the valley floors, with the storm worsening during the Thursday afternoon commute, according to the weather service. Visibility could be reduced to less than a mile during periods of heavy snow. Winds will be 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45. Winds may gust as high as 115 mph along ridges.
For the Carson City area, snow levels will be between 4,500 feet to 5,000 feet in the afternoon, eventually lowering to the valley floor by late afternoon and early evening.
If you're traveling, expect chain controls and travel delays on Highway 50 over Spooner Summit and Echo Summit, State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade, and highways 88 and 89, Interstate 80.
