Carson High artists counted among state's best
January’s finalists in the local Parent-Teacher Student Association Reflections Art Contest at Carson High School put their creative works up against the state’s best for a chance to compete at the National PTA Reflections awards ceremony held this summer.
All of the Carson High artists placed in their respective categories, receiving statewide recognition for their entries.
There were two first place category winners from Carson High School in the Nevada PTA Reflections competition this year, as well as two second place finishers, three third place finalists, and five merit awards.
“I’m super excited about our kids this year,” said Carson High School Parent-Teacher Student Association President LeAnn Saarem at the conclusion of Thursday night’s awards ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City.
“All of our finalists placed in state competition," she said. "When you consider how big the Las Vegas area is, that is quite an achievement.”
Carson High Sophomore Carlos Montejano had perhaps the biggest night of the group. His music composition entry titled “Skyworld” took first place in the state.
Montejano was also recognized with a special award for overall Outstanding Interpretation of Theme.
Junior Chandler Blueberg, meanwhile, won second place statewide in the music composition category for her entry entitled “Mother Earth.”
And CHS senior Ethan Lopes was given an Award of Merit for his music composition entry titled “Drops of Abstraction.”
In visual arts, CHS Junior Sharline Villeda was awarded first place in state competition for her puzzle sculpture entitled “Puzzle Becomes the Idea.”
Classmate Ryan Tomita won second place in visual arts with his three-dimensional box sculpture entitled “An Open Mind.”
CHS Junior Annette Avila took third place statewide for her sculpture entry entitled “Mateo.”
Sydnie Schuller took home two awards in the photography category for her pair of finalist entries.
Schuller, a Carson High junior, claimed third place for one entry and an Award of Merit for her second entry. Schuller’s entries are entitled “Close Enough to Touch,” and “Moon and Waves.”
Classmate Kathryn Liemandt received an Award of Merit for her photography entry titled “Modern Ophelia.”
In the literature category, CHS Junior Kaylee Rose Gordon placed third statewide with her prose titled “The Curing Powers of Imagination,” while fellow classmates Nick Rosen and Darby Griffin were presented with Awards of Merit for their respective works entitled “The Significance of Imagination in Society” and “The Importance of Imagination.”
First place finishers automatically qualify to have their works entered into the national contest, the awards ceremony for which will be held July 2 at the National PTA Convention in Orlando, Florida.
