Carson City shifts open space program focus from buying to managing lands
Yesterday the Carson City Board of Supervisors heard the person in charge of the city's open space program outline new goals for the future.
After the city's buying spree of hundreds of acres of open space lands in recent years, Open Space Manager Juan Guzman said they are now shifting to better managing those lands.
One area of particular concern is the newly acquired lands in Carson River Canyon east of Deer Run Road. The area has been used in the past for target shooting, off-roading and long-term camping, which are not allowed since the city took over the property.
Money for the city's open space program comes mostly from voter-approved Question 18 funds, along with state and federal grants.
The supervisors also:
- Appointed Ronni Hannaman to the city's Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee
- Appointed Robert Stansbury to the Carson City Cultural Commission
- Heard presentations for Community Development Block Grants
