Woman faces multiple charges in theft of checks
A 21-year-old Hawthorne woman who had been under investigation since October by Carson City authorities for stealing two books of checks in September faces a gross misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit theft and two related misdemeanor charges.
The unemployed woman, who has been an inmate at the Carson City jail on other charges, was booked on the theft charges on Wednesday. Bail was set at $2,500.
According to the arrest report, the investigation began back in October after the victim of the theft contacted authorities about checks being written on her account. Officers spoke with the victim and, subsequently, a second suspect who later confessed that she assisted with the theft of the checks from the victim, according to the arrest report.
The victim told authorities that the 21-year-old woman and the second suspect were in her home and near where the checks were taken on Sept. 24, 2010. During an interview, the second suspect confessed to conspiring with the 21-year-old woman to steal the checks. She informed officers that the 21-year-old woman took two books of checks from the victim's counter and handed them to her where she later admitted to having fraudulently written checks on the account, the arrest report stated.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday Dec. 28, 2010 an officer with the Investigations Division went to the Carson City Jail and took custody of the 21-year-old woman who was an inmate. The woman admitted to stealing the checks while in the victim's home after seeing them on a counter and then later handed them to the second suspect after the two "exchanged looks," according to the arrest report.
She told the officer she waited for the victim to leave the room and then took two books of the victim's checks from the counter. She told the investigator that she put the books of checks into her purse, left the victim's home and then handed them to the second suspect, according to the arrest report. The two parted and she told the officer that she had no other involvement in using any of the stolen checks, the arrest report stated.
The 21-year-old woman completed a written statement documenting her confession to the theft of the checks. On Wednesday, the investigating officer added conspiracy to commit theft, theft and possession of stolen property to the woman's booking.
