Legislation to stop climate change the topic at Carson City Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Chas Macquarie of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby. He will explain how the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 763) could bring down the emissions fueling climate change by putting a price on carbon pollution and returning those revenues to households.
The law promises to reduce U.S. emissions by 40 percent or more in the first 12 years and 90 percent by 2050. It would both improve health outcomes and save lives. The carbon dividend promises put money directly into people’s pockets while creating 2.1 million new jobs.
Chas has long been active in the community. He is past president of the Rotary Club of Carson City, and was a founding member of Muscle Powered and Citizens for a Walkable and Bikeable Carson City. In 2014 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Governor’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board in honor of his work supporting bicyclists and pedestrians in the Silver State.
He is former CEO of Lumos & Associates, a Northern Nevada civil engineering, planning, surveying, and materials testing firm. He is past president of the Nevada Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers and past Chair of the Northern Nevada Branch of the American Public Works Association.
A lifelong climber and mountaineer, Chas has long taken an active interest in the natural world. Along with his engineering background, this has given him a deep appreciation for the ways in which global warming has impacted the environment. He brings these insights to presentations on the science of climate change to service clubs and other groups to improve public understanding of the issue and raise awareness of its consequences.
This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, June 24th, in the banquet room of Carson City's Round Table, on Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City's Democratic HQ. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome.
