"Mother Courage and Her Children" at First United Methodist Church
The First United Methodist Church’s Readers’ Theater will present a reading of "Mother Courage and Her Children," on May 11, 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Carson City, NW corner of Division and Musser Streets. This drama was written by the German playwright Bertold Brecht in 1939 when Brecht lived in exile in the United States.
A chronicle of the Thirty Years’ War (1618- 1648), the play is part musical, part drama, and the Readers’ Theater production will feature visual representations of the drama as well as selected readings from the text. It promises to be a lively and provocative hour and one half performance followed by a conversation between audience and readers as to Brecht’s intention with the play versus most audiences’ reactions to it.
The plot of the play is simple. It follows the ups and downs of Anna Fierling, an itinerant trader who together with her three grown children follows the Swedish and Holy Roman Empire’s armies as they battle each other from the northern provinces of East Europe down to Bavaria in Germany.
