Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host 'Trail Graze' guided hike on C-Hill
Join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department for an educational hike on C-Hill and learn about the ways sheep grazing helps prevent wildfires. Please leave all furry friends at home, as we will be hiking near the sheep as they graze.
In Nevada, we have two seasons: winter and fire. At the moment, we're right on the cusp of fire season, and our proactive sheep friends from Borda Family Lamb Ranch have risen to the challenge to help prevent fire devastation in Carson City for another year.
For more than 100 years, the Borda Family Lamb Ranch has been raising sheep in the Carson Valley as well as keeping basque traditions alive and well in Nevada. Carson City has utilized them for years to help cut down on fire damage caused by dry grasses in the hills.
The ewes and lambs were released into the hills earlier this week along with their shepherds, who have set up their camp in the hills behind Greenhouse Garden Center, and they'll be in charge of grazing 2,000 acres of Carson City foothills until they move on.
Park and meet at the C-Hill Trailhead off of McKay Drive in Carson City.
