WNC Baseball: Wildcats series in Salt Lake ends in a wash

It wasn’t the desired result Western Nevada College was looking for prior to a four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball series showdown with Salt Lake, but the Wildcats did something no other team has done this season — win in Salt Lake City.

The Wildcats gained a series split by outlasting the Bruins 7-5 in the final game Saturday. Needing a doubleheader sweep to creep within a game of first-place Salt Lake, WNC wasn’t counting on a shaky defense hurting its cause.

The Western Nevada College sophomore was protecting a one-run lead against College of Southern Idaho with the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

With a base open, Greer instead focused on cleanup hitter R.J. Bush, retiring him looking at a third-strike curveball.

WNC Baseball: Fife, Harber help Wildcats gain doubleheader split

Through 13 innings of a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday, College of Southern Idaho denied Western Nevada College from putting a crooked number on the scoreboard. But with one swing by Alex Fife that changed as his homer brought in three runs, helping the Wildcats to a doubleheader split.

Fife’s homer was part of a four-run seventh inning that snapped a 1-1 tie and propelled the Wildcats to a 5-1 victory at John L. Harvey Field in Carson CIty. The Golden Eagles won the opener 6-2 behind the pitching of southpaw Kolton Brost.

Signups are underway for the Caddyshack-themed Golf Fore The Kids Charity Children's Golf Tournament to be held on Sunday, May 4, at Eagle Valley East Golf Course in Carson City.

WNC Softball: Wildcats’ offense comes to life against 14th-ranked CSI

After a silent day for the Western Nevada College bats on Friday, the Wildcats woke up offensively against 14th-ranked College of Southern Idaho on Saturday in Twins Falls, Idaho.

With eight different Wildcats delivering a hit in the opening game, the Carson City Western Nevada College team scored seven times in a 17-7 defeat. CSI completed the four-game Scenic West Athletic Conference sweep with a 14-3 victory in game two.

Western Nevada College moved into second place in the Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball standings by winning a four-game series from host College of Southern Nevada on Thursday and Friday in Henderson.

The Wildcats, based in Carson City, won the first three games of the series before the Coyotes edged WNC 4-3 Friday to deny a sweep. WNC improved to 7-5 in the SWAC, trailing only Salt Lake (11-2). CSN is 4-8 in conference play.

Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad

An extra-curricular activity at Eagle Valley Middle School, 11 Carson City students prepared for three months at after school meetings and on their own to compete in the state Science Olympiad held March 8 in Las Vegas. The team is coached by Josh Billings, 8th grade science teacher with assistance from family and teachers.

Seventh-Ranked College of Southern Nevada Holds Off Wildcats

Three mercy-rule-shortened games against seventh-ranked College of Southern Nevada didn’t demoralize the Western Nevada College softball team on Saturday in Henderson.

Freshman pitcher Katilyn Covione blanked the Coyotes for four innings, and the Wildcats had the tying and possible winning runs in scoring positions in the final inning before CSN nailed down a 3-2 Scenic West Athletic Conference victory.

The Coyotes started their Saturday sweep with a five-inning 11-2 victory.

The Western Nevada College Wildcats may look back to Friday, March 14 as a pivotal point in their season. Two dramatic walk-off victories gave the Wildcats a momentum boost that inspired them to workmanlike 17-2 and 7-5 nonconference wins over Mount Hood Community College of Gresham, Ore., on Saturday in Carson City.

The four-game sweep improved WNC’s overall record to 19-9 and righted the club after splitting four games the previous weekend at Colorado Northwestern.

WNC Softball: Coyotes defeat Wildcats twice despite homers by Septon, Rechel

Sophomores Jenny Rechel and Heather Septon slugged home runs, but Western Nevada College lost both ends of a softball doubleheader to seventh-ranked College of Southern Nevada by identical 11-3 scores on Friday in Henderson.

The wins moved the Coyotes (16-6) into a first-place tie with College of Southern Idaho (17-7) in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings. WNC’s SWAC record dropped to 6-15.

WNC baseball team takes two to open series

The Western Nevada College baseball team turned turned two tight contests into victories with walk-off home runs on both ends of a doubleheader Friday afternoon in Carson City.

The Wildcats won 6-5 and 9-6 over Mount Hood Community College of Oregon. The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at John L. Harvey Field beginning at noon.

The Western Nevada College Wildcats baseball team just won game one of a four game series against Mount Hood Community Community College 6-5, in 10 innings.

Game 2 begins at approximately 3 p.m. today, at John L. Harvey Field at WNC in Carson City.

Another doubleheader begins Saturday at noon.

CHS Bowling Steamrolls Manogue 34-11 for Unprecedented 13th Title

The Carson High Bowling team wasted no time at all in wrapping up their 13th championship in 14 seasons on Wednesday at the Grand Sierra Resort against Manogue High School.

The Carson High School starting lineup: Alec Fletcher, Jacob Zumbro, Dustin Floyd, Skylar Belchar, Brett Paulson, Matt Lidell, Chris Baird, Conlin Herrick, and Tyler Lethcoe steamrolled Manogue 34-11 in the Baker's format for the title. CHS wrapped up the championship by the 6th game in the 9 game match.

WNC Softball: Wildcats at home split doubleheader with Snow College, games continue Saturday

Western Nevada College Wildcats Softball hosted Snow College from Ephraim, Utah Friday at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. WNC entered the series just one game behind Snow in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, and remained that way, splitting Friday’s doubleheader.

In game one, the Wildcats topped Snow 3-1, with Meghan Hospodka hitting a three run homer to win it for WNC. In the second game, Snow College rallied to win 12-4, despite two home runs by Wildcat Hali Bennion. Carlee Beck pitched both games for WNC.

WNC Baseball: Karnos, Roque Key Wildcats’ SWAC-Opening Victory

Pitching decided the outcomes of a Scenic West Athletic Conference-opening baseball doubleheader Saturday at John L. Harvey Field in Carson City.

Freshman right-hander Max Karnos pitched a four-hit complete game to provide Western Nevada College with a 7-1 victory over Salt Lake in the opener, but the Bruins battled back for a 6-2 win in game two behind the stingy hurling of Jason Jourdan and Eric Carter.

“Salt Lake has a good team. We each won one; that’s about right,” WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said.

New athletic facility opens in Carson City

Rob Heaton has opened Talents Athletic Center, a sports facility located in North Carson that offers programs on agility, speed, strength, conditioning, personal training and group program development for kids 5 to 18.

WNC Softball: Wildcats Lose Tripleheader to North Idaho

North Idaho College cooled off the Western Nevada College Wildcats, sweeping three Scenic West Athletic Conference softball games on Friday in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Tori Almos blanked WNC on four hits while striking out 11 to earn the first-game victory, 6-0, snapping the Wildcats’ five-game winning streak. The Cardinals completed the sweep with 14-1 and 10-5 wins.

The teams elected to play three games on Friday with snow and extremely cold temperatures forecast for Coeur d’Alene on Saturday. A high temperature of 12 degrees is expected on Saturday.

WNC Baseball To Kick Off Conference Play At Home Against Salt Lake today, Sunday

The Western Nevada College baseball team came out on top in the Scenic West Athletic Conference’s round-robin competition over the last weekend.

Now WNC, which improved to 11-5 overall, will play Salt Lake, the only team to beat the Wildcats in Henderson, on Saturday and Sunday, March 1-2, at John L. Harvey Field. The conference-opening doubleheaders begin at noon both days, weather permitting.

South Lake Tahoe, the tight-knit ski community big on Olympic athletes will honor its three USA team members in a city-wide celebration, Saturday, March 15.

Jamie Anderson, Maddie Bowman, who won gold for snowboarding slopestyle and freeskiing halfpipe respectively, and Hannah Teter who placed fourth in snowboarding halfpipe, will be lauded at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort.

Carson Youth Wrestling Club Competes at National Tournament

The Carson Bulldog Wrestling Club competed in the Rocky Mountain National’s Rumble in Reno wrestling tournament this past Saturday at the Peppermill.

Carson City’s youth wrestling club had 20 wrestlers competing in both the Rookie and Experienced categories for ages 6 to 15 years old. The club finished with ten top placers, four of which were first place honors.

Salt Lake Community College freshman right-hander Jason Jourdan checked the 14th-ranked Wildcats on two hits through seven innings en route to the Bruins’ 4-3 baseball victory in Henderson.

WNC Softball Tops Colorado Northwestern; Games continue Saturday in Carson City

Western Nevada College Wildcats Softball hosted Colorado Northwestern Community College Friday afternoon for a doubleheader at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City. The Wildcats won both games, 10-2 and 7-2. Pitchers Carlee Beck and Katilyn Covione earned the wins for Western.

In game one, the Wildcats scored in the second inning when Lindsay Ashbaugh knocked an RBI double that scored Andi Lee, who was walked and Katilyn Covione who singled. The score 2-0, WNC.
