Local coyote hunt draws some controversy

Local hunters have organized a coyote hunt, which has raised hackles of animal protection groups. The Saturday event, called a coyote calling contest, is similar to hunts in other parts of Nevada and Western states.
Coyotes are an unprotected species in Nevada; a license or permit is not required to hunt them, according to the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

Fire Chief: Gas leak likely from a mobile gas truck

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said the gas leak early Friday night was likely a gas truck that was mobile in the area and making deliveries. Douglas County fire agencies also received calls to dispatch regarding the smell from other points in the area.
He said mobile gas trucks sometimes emit odors after deliveries or if there is pressure build-up in tanks some gas will be released.

UPDATE: Carson City firefighters were unable to determine the source of the gas leak early Friday night that sent a strong odor of natural gas into the air near Costco prompting a brief evacuation, according to dispatch. Highway 395 at Old Clear Creek Road has been reopened.

Douglas County gears up for Lake Tahoe New Year's Eve Celebration at Stateline

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is making preparations for the upcoming New Year’s Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe starting on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014.

Due to the ordinarily high volume of celebrants within the Stateline casino core area during the event, U.S. Highway 50 may be closed to vehicle traffic in the evening if necessary for public safety. If that should occur, vehicle traffic will be diverted around the Stateline casino core area using upper and lower Lake Parkway Drive.

Artisan Showcase at Carson City Chamber now open

When the Carson City Chamber purchased the share of the building previously occupied by the visitors bureau, they found themselves with extra space that once housed the visitor center and gift shop operated by the bureau.

What to do with that extra space was the question. Since that vacant space was always operated as a gift shop, the Chamber decided to operate an artisan shop to showcase local talented artists and provide them with yet another outlet to sell their unique art.

Woman jailed on felony possession of marijuana after Christmas Day traffic stop

A Truckee, Calif., woman was arrested Dec. 25, 2:38 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Carson Street on felony suspicion of possession of marijuana after officers found approximately 4.5 ounces in her vehicle following a traffic stop, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Carson City Curbside Christmas tree recycling begins Jan. 5

Carson City and Waste Management again offers their annual Christmas tree curbside recycling service this season. As in previous post-holiday years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to drop off locations beginning Jan. 5, 2015.
