Prescribed fire operations continue at Lake Tahoe into 2015
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 3:04pmThe Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations this week on Kingsbury Grade near Buchanan Road, Ski Run Boulevard near Heavenly, Luther Pass and Spooner Summit. Operations will last through the next several weeks as conditions allow.

The program includes Gloria from the Mass in B minor featuring the Tahoe Symphony Chorus and vocal soloists. Ms Pitcairn will perform Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D major on the legendary Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius violin. Other performances in the series at other venues are on Feb. 8, 11, and 15. Capital’s visitors bureau: Vote for Carson City

In the weeks since the contest was announced online, Carson City has bounced between first, second and third places. However, it is now holding steady in the top position.
Reservations begin for 2015 Carson Valley Eagles and Agriculture event

The 2015 version sees a few adjustments. For the first time ever, The Ranch & Eagle Tour & Luncheon will be offered on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.
More than 40,000 Nevadans pick 2015 Marketplace health plans in open enrollment
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 11:48amAccording to a report released Tuesday by the Department of Health and Human Services, 40,285 people in Nevada selected plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace leading up to the Dec. 15 deadline for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2015.
About 90 percent of Nevadans who selected health insurance plans in the first month of open enrollment were determined eligible for financial assistance to lower their monthly premiums. All of the 40,285 Nevadans who selected a plan signed up for the first time.
Avian bird flu found in Pacific Northwest prompts Nevada, USDA advisories
Submitted by editor on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 11:41amThe Nevada Department of Agriculture is recommending that bird owners in Nevada adopt extra healthy hygiene practices after avian bird influenza was found in Oregon and Washington.
While health risks to humans are low, the United States Department of Agriculture’sAnimal and Plant Health Inspection Service is warning people to avoid contact with sick or dead poultry or wildlife.
Nevada State Veterinarian Michael Greenlee said that the highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus has been found in birds in various parts of the world but has not been shown to cause any human infection.
Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Man jailed on warrant charges of stalking and harassment
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 10:20amA Dayton man was arrested early Tuesday morning at Highway 50 and Empire Ranch Road on misdemeanor warrant charges of harassment and first offense stalking, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
According to the arrest report, the 57-year-old man was stopped on a traffic violation, failing to use a turn signal. The man acknowledged the violation by saying he did not feel it was necessary to use a turn signal when changing lanes because he did not see another vehicle in the lane he was merging into, the arrest report states.
Snow and cold weather arrives in Carson City to round out 2014
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 12/30/2014 - 8:45amWhile the snow didn't come over Christmas, it did arrive before the new year. It is snowing in Carson City this morning, with around an inch or less (or more) on the ground around parts of town.
Snow showers will continue in Western Nevada this morning, heaviest from Reno through Minden/Gardnerville toward Hawthorne. Total snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is expected through the Reno/Carson City area with 2 to 4 inches south into Minden and Gardnerville.
Carson City area gaming revenue down less than 1 percent in November

Carson City firefighters called to structure fire on north Division
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 12/29/2014 - 9:01pmUPDATE 9:19PM: One man was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of a house fire Monday night in the 1500 block of North Division. Two dogs were inside the home when the fire started. One dog escaped and another suffered smoke inhalation and was treated at the scene by firefighters, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi.
The dog was not in good shape when firefighters found him but emergency crews were able to help the dog breathe, said Giomi. The dog is now recovering under the supervision of animal services and should survive.
