Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War”

August 25, 2014 (All day) Douglas County is hosting the Western Nevada College “Always Lost: A Meditation on War” arts and humanities exhibition as part of a special Nevada Sesquicentennial tour sponsored by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS). The exhibit will be on display at the Minden Inn August 25-September 12, 2014 and is free and open to the public. Viewing hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. with extended hours on Thursdays (August 28, Sept. 4 and Sept.
Greater Nevada Expands Business Lending Services

Over the past year and a half, Greater Nevada Credit Union (GNCU), the area’s largest locally-based credit union, has seen more than 115% growth in its business lending portfolio. One of the credit union’s newest products, construction loans, is taking off just as rapidly, thanks to local businesses that want to expand, and the unique services offered by Greater Nevada to help them do it.
New Outreach Supervisor Joins Greater Nevada

Michelle Hale has been named Greater Nevada Credit Union’s new Member Outreach Supervisor. She will oversee both community relations and member outreach.
Her community relations responsibilities will entail acting as liaison between Greater Nevada and the organizations it supports, including the University of Nevada Marching Band and Wolf Pack Athletics, Special Olympics Nevada, and the Truckee Meadows Habitat for Humanity. She will also coordinate Greater Nevada’s financial literacy efforts through local schools and other groups.

Carson City Ward 2 Supervisor Brad Bonkowski will hold his monthly “Breakfast with Brad” on Friday, August 1, 7:30 a.m. at the Cracker Box restaurant. All Carson City residents are invited to attend.
“There are many issues right now that are provoking strong opinions from residents” Bonkowski said. He added “I’m hearing from lots of people regarding the MAC, the animal shelter, the potential corridor improvements and of course medical marijuana. It’s important that I get input from residents, and also to explain how the process will work.”
Salvation Army Apple Tree Back Pack and School Supplies Drive underway

The Salvation Army of Carson City is collecting Back Packs and School Supplies for underprivileged children through August 13th. The Salvation Army has been getting calls from families in need for several weeks asking for help. Children from Carson City School District, Silver State Charter School, and Douglas County School District will receive all back packs and school supplies that are collected.
Similar to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Tree program the Army has started an Apple Tree program with “Apples” that have a child’s wishes on it to help donors shop.
BEAR Logic Month: What to do if you encounter a bear

Keep in mind that bears exhibit stress behaviors that indicate their anxiety and preference to avoid conflict with you. These are not necessarily signs of an aggressive bear.
— Moaning and woofing while avoiding direct eye contact with you.
— Clacking of their teeth and smacking of their jaws.
National Night Out canceled due to weather, Mills Park conditions

UDPATE: The Carson City Sheriff’s Office regrets to inform everyone that the 12th Annual National Night Out in Mills Park, set for Tuesday, August 5 at 5 p.m. has been canceled.
It has been determined that with the park's current ground saturation from the rain, the quantity of “heavy” public safety vehicles, aircraft and equipment that was scheduled to be on the grassy area of the park would cause irreparable damage. Further, at this late hour, there is insufficient time to orchestrate a reasonable relocation of the event location.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log

— A 43-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday, July 29, 12:36 a.m. in the 1400 block of North Lompa Lane on a misdemeanor warrant charge of petit larceny. Bail: $1,000.

Column: Documenting vehicle expenses

David H. Garza had vehicle expenses disallowed because he did not keep adequate records and evidence as Section 274(d) and the related regulations require.
He did not record the amount, time and business purpose of each business use of his truck. He worked as an outside sales representative for Time Warner Cable.
He claimed the vehicle expenses as employee business expenses on form 1040, Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. Time Warner Cable policy did not provide him with any reimbursement of his business driving.
