Assembly Welcomes New Representative for District 17

The Nevada Assembly welcomed a new member today during its floor session. Tyrone Thompson was sworn in as the new representative for Assembly District 17 in Clark County. The North Las Vegas democrat is taking the seat left vacant by ousted Assemblyman Steven Brooks, who was expelled following a series of public incidents and threats to his colleagues.

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.

The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Autism in Aquatics classes Friday and Saturday at Carson City swim center

A program designed for professionals and parents throughout Northern Nevada on how to teach water safety and swimming to children with autism will be this Friday, April 26, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, April 27, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Carson City Aquatic Center, 841 N Roop St Carson City.

The instructor is Dawn Lewellyn of Clearwater Florida, CTRS, WSI, AI, KIT Trainer of My World Therapeutic Recreation Services, LLC.

Children will be in the water with instructors and one parent will need to be in the water with their child.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office has partnered with Project ChildSafe to offer free gun locks now through the foreseeable future.

Washoe Valley teen gravely injured in Pleasant Valley rollover

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports a Washoe Valley teen was gravely injured in a vehicle rollover accident in Pleasant Valley.

As of Wednesday morning, Heather Brown, 17, is on an artificial life-support system at Renown Regional Medical Center as result of the extensive injuries she suffered in Tuesday's accident, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Carson City Chamber announces 2013-14 board of directors

Carson City Chamber of Commerce Chairman of the Board Stan Jones is pleased to announce the 2013-14 Board of Directors and Officers.

Re-elected to a second three year term are Curt Spradley, owner, Carson Coffee and Carol Swanson, District Sales for Mary Kay.

Bob Tote, general manager of Costco Carson City, is new to the board and will serve a three-year term.

Gordon Gagnon, co-owner REDCO, and Joyce Whitney-Silva, COO of Greater Nevada Credit Union, have been selected to serve their first three year term advancing from a one-year Chairman’s pick slot.

Amodei pushes bill to speed public land transfers

Nevada Congressman Mark Amodei announced Wednesday the re-introduction of his "Small Lands Tracts Conveyance Act" (H.R. 1633) to accelerate the process for transferring small parcels of federal land to local communities.

In western states, straightforward, non-controversial public land sales to decrease the vast federal inventory and promote local control can take more than a decade to complete. While Amodei believes there should be scrutiny for any sale, he cites the bureaucratic regulatory maze and slow legislative process as the main culprits in dragging out the transfers.
