The Nevada Assembly welcomed a new member today during its floor session. Tyrone Thompson was sworn in as the new representative for Assembly District 17 in Clark County. The North Las Vegas democrat is taking the seat left vacant by ousted Assemblyman Steven Brooks, who was expelled following a series of public incidents and threats to his colleagues.
After Nevada Supreme Court Justice Mark Gibbons read the oath with Thompson, the entire Assembly rose and gave their new member a warm round of applause. Thompson’s family was in attendance for the swearing in ceremony.
Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick said she is honored to have Thompson as a part of the Assembly.
“I’m really glad that you could make it, we look forward to it,” Kirkpatrick said.
Thompson is currently the Regional Initiatives Coordinator for Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition where he works to address and prevent homelessness in the state. Thompson has also worked for both the City of Las Vegas in Neighborhood Planning and Initiatives and Clark County Social Services. He received his Bachelors degree from Northern Arizona University and a Masters from University of Phoenix.
Thompson will serve on four assembly committees—Health and Human Services, Judiciary, Legislative Operations and Elections, and Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Mining.
