'Tahoe Talks' lunch series continues Wednesday

A Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch Series recently launched offers a monthly forum for people to discuss and learn more about ways to strengthen communities, make towns safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, and help protect Lake Tahoe’s amazing natural resources.

Lunches are held monthly at ≈. They cover topics ranging from transportation to the economy and the environment, and offer a comfortable, low-key setting for people to discuss and learn about those issues. The events are free to the public.

Independent living agency for disabled offers information, services in Carson City, Dayton

The Northern Nevada Center for Independent Living is partnering with various agencies to expand its services into the rural areas of Nevada.
Staff members be visiting a different rural Nevada area each week to share information about products and services available to rural residents who have disabilities. They’ll be at the Carson City Senior Center, Friday, March 6 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the Dayton Senior Center the second Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and the Dayton Library the third Thursday of each month, from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.

There’s a lot to be learned by studying others’ successes. At the Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch this February, a design engineer for the Federal Highway Administration discussed how modern roundabouts are being used to improve traffic and make roads safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, as well as where they would make the most sense at Lake Tahoe.

Sinking road forces NDOT to close portion of State Route 342 from Devils Gate to Gold Hill

The Nevada Department of Transportation said Sunday night that it has temporarily closed a portion of State Route 342 south of Gold Hill as a safety precaution following recent roadway cracking and sinking.

State Route 342 runs approximately from the Silver City area through Gold Hill to southern Virginia City, connecting U.S. 50 west of Dayton to Virginia City. An approximately two-mile portion of the road between Devils Gate and Gold Hill is closed to traffic (between mile markers 2 and 4).

Carson City area donations help FISH buy shelter shuttle

Through the support of Carson City area donors and organizations, Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, has bought a “new” used shuttle bus to transport residents of its homeless shelter. The 2008 Starcraft vehicle has a lift for wheelchair access and seats 13 passengers.

It replaces the FISH shelter van that had over 240,000 miles, carried only 10 passengers, and had no ability to transport clients using wheelchairs.

As the incoming Chair of the 15-member Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board, this promises to be a hopeful and exciting year. 2015 will be full of opportunities, but also challenges, for the continued protection of Lake Tahoe.

The number one priority among our challenges is funding shortfalls. Federal and state funding that has paid for environmental restoration and protection efforts at Lake Tahoe for years is drying up and new approaches need to be pursued.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Dec. 8-14, 2014. On Thursday, Dec. 11, Carson Street will be reduced to one lane in each direction at the intersection with Spear Street from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Beginning the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 10, through the evening of Thursday, Dec. 11, there will be no parking on the west side of Curry Street between Telegraph Street and Proctor Street.

NDOT says its ready for winter snow season

With the potential for the first significant storm of the season due to arrive Sunday into Monday, the winter season in Northern Nevada is about to kick in. Nevada Department of Transportation says it has finished its annual winter preparations, employing new technology and more than 80 snow plows and other equipment to help keep roads clear through the upcoming season.

Nevada Department of Transportation promotes two staffers to executive positions

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Transportation has promoted two staff members to executive positions overseeing department operations and planning, respectively. Reid Kaiser has been appointed as NDOT assistant director of operations and Sondra Rosenberg will serve as assistant director of planning.

Lake Tahoe man who spent time skiing while drawing disability benefits sentenced for workers' compensation fraud

A 60-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was sentenced to a year in prison Tuesday and ordered to pay $160,000 in restitution for making false statements to obtain workers' compensation benefits, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Mark E. Leung, 60, worked for the United States Postal Service until 1987 when he claimed he sustained a work-related injury. Leung never returned to full-time employment with the Postal Service and began receiving workers’ compensation benefits in 1987, according to the Justice Department.

With first winter storm arriving Friday, Nevada officials offer winter driving tips

With the first winter storm of the fall arriving in the Sierra Friday and Saturday, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol offers these winter driving tips to help motorists drive more throughout the upcoming season.

On average, more than 2,000 crashes occur statewide every year due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

Lake Tahoe bikeway photo by NDOT wins national competition

A photograph illustrating transportation efforts on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe has been selected as a winner in a national photo competition by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

Nevada Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Julie Duewel’s photo showing Lake Tahoe’s Stateline to Stateline Bikeway won the “Road Less Traveled” category of the Faces of Transportation competition. The photo was taken during a June dedication ceremony for the second segment of the Nevada Stateline to Stateline Bikeway.

Tahoe Mountain Milers partner with Carson City Guide Dog Club for Nevada Day Classic

An annual event since 1989, The Nevada Day Classic — presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers — is an 8K run, a 2-mile run/walk through the historic west side of Carson City. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union.

This year, for the race's 25th anniversary and the Nevada’s 150th, the Classic will be organized in partnership with the Carson City Guide Dog Club and all net proceeds will go to Guide Dogs For The Blind.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will be continuing road work on Highway 50 from Arrowhead Drive in Carson City to Baldwine Lane in Mound House. On Monday, August 25, Telegraph Street will be closed to through traffic between Division Street and Minnesota Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

NDOT finishes important phase of Carson City freeway work

Work on a critical construction phase of the Carson City Freeway Project has finished, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Completion of the 2B-2 roadway project is considered a milestone, NDOT officials say. The project included roadway grading, utility relocation, extensive drainage facilities to channel storm water runoff and construction of an overpass bringing Snyder Avenue over the future freeway.
