JAC celebrates a decade of service in Carson City

With more than 1.5 million rides thus far, this Saturday will mark the 10-year anniversary of Carson City’s public transportation system, Jump Around Carson, also known as JAC.

To celebrate, JAC will offer free rides throughout the day Monday, Oct. 5, on its four fixed Carson City area routes. Additionally, special “10 Years of Service” memorabilia will be passed out to riders and citizens alike throughout the year, said Carson City Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Sept. 14-20, 2015: The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue bridge maintenance on the I-580 Carson City Freeway with nightly lane closures and intermittent on and off ramp closures during weeknights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Sept. 13

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Sept. 7-13, 2015: Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8, through Friday Sep. 11, Race Track Road will be closed between Bigelow Drive and Saddlehorn Road due to utility work. Saddlehorn Road will be open to local traffic only and there will be limited access during night hours. Detours will be signed.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through August 30

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of August 24-30, 2015. Crews will continue re-striping pavement markings on roadways throughout the city Sunday through Thursday each night from 7:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. There will be a moving traffic control at locations where the striping occurs, with minor delays expected.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Aug. 17-23, 2015: Beginning Sunday through Thursday, August 20, crews will be re-striping pavement markings on roadways throughout the city each night from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. There will be a moving traffic control at locations where the striping occurs, with minor delays expected.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Aug. 10-16, 2015: Minnesota Street is now closed to through traffic between King and Second streets. The area will be used as a public space for special events.

Highway 50 livestock fencing project begins

The Nevada Department of Transportation will enhance traffic safety with a new project that began Monday by installing livestock fencing on sections of Highway 50 in Silver Springs.

The project will fence approximately four and a half miles of U.S. 50 between Boyer Lane and Pinto Street and from Onyx Street to the U.S. 95 Alternate intersection in Silver Springs. The four-strand, smooth wire fencing will stand four feet high to help prevent wild horses and cattle from entering the highway.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of August 3-9, 2015: Beginning Tuesday, August 4, Minnesota Street will be closed to through traffic between King and Second Streets. The area will be used as a public space for special events.

The Nevada Department of Transportation will continue construction of drainage improvements on U.S. Highway 50 West between the two truck ramps, just west of Highway 395 to Sierra Highlands Drive. There will be lane closures Monday through Friday, but the roadway will remain open to traffic in both directions.

Living in a region like Reno-Tahoe, it is hard to imagine life without outdoor recreation. Up until two years ago, I took this perspective for granted.

Then I developed severe discomfort in my legs that resulted in impaired mobility. I have since been diagnosed with a neuromuscular disorder. I require a three-point cane for most activity outside of the home, as well as a four-wheeled walker at times.

Nighttime lane closures will be in place beginning Sunday on South Carson Street and U.S. 50 near Spooner junction for the Nevada Department of Transportation’s Carson City Freeway project, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 29 through July 5, 2015: Division Street will be closed between Sophia Street and William Street for sidewalk improvements as well as Sophia Street just west of Division Street.

Work will occur from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day and detours will be in place. The JAC bus stop on Route 2A on Division Street just south of Sophia Street will be temporarily closed.

NDOT breaks ground on final leg of Carson City Freeway project

The Nevada Department of Transportation begins construction today on the $42 million final leg of the Carson City Freeway project.

Road crews will pave and open the last four miles of the freeway to traffic between Fairview Drive and the Spooner, Highway 50 junction in south Carson City, including construction of sound walls and drainage features. The project is expected to complete, opening the final segment of freeway to traffic, in 2017, according to NDOT. It is being constructed by contractors Road and Highway Builders.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of June 8-14. On Tuesday, June 9, and Wednesday, June 10, there will be intermittent lane closures with flaggers on the south side of Winne Lane near the intersection with Ormsby Boulevard due to the construction of shoulder improvements.

NDOT finishes up Dayton median turn lanes project along Highway 50

The Nevada Department of Transportation has largely completed a project to enhance traffic safety with raised center turn lane islands and other improvements on U.S. 50 near the Smith’s Shopping Center in Dayton.

The approximately $300,000 project constructed by Sierra Nevada Construction installed approximately 4,250 linear feet of concrete raised turn islands in the median of U.S. 50 at three shopping center entrances: Retail Road, Pinecone Road and the main entrance to the Smith’s shopping center.

Carson City area road report: Closures this week east of downtown for sealing project

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 11-17: Due to roadway sealing, there will be road closures throughout the entire week east of downtown in the general vicinity of William Street to the north, Saliman Road to the east, Fifth Street to the south, and Carson Street to the west, as well as along Deer Run Road and Pinon Hills Drive and the neighborhood directly west of Fremont Elementary School.

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of May 4-10, 2015: Beginning Tuesday, May 5, through Thursday, May 7, the outside northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Steamboat Drive and Sweetwater Drive.

On Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5, there will be a lane closure on Kansas Street just north of Colorado Street with flagger controlled traffic.

On Wednesday, May 6, there will be a lane closure on Ryan Way between Arrowhead Drive and Lockheed Way with flagger controlled traffic.

Highway 50 center turn lane improvement project in Dayton begins

A Nevada Department of Transportation project has begun this week to enhance traffic safety with raised center turn lane islands and other enhancements near the Smith’s Shopping Center in Dayton.

The approximately $300,000 contract, awarded to Sierra Nevada Construction, will install raised turn islands in the median of U.S. 50 at three shopping center entrances: Retail Road, Pinecone Road and the main entrance to the Smith’s shopping center.

Low bidder for $42M final leg of Carson City freeway project named, work begins in June

The Nevada Department of Transportation’s Carson City Freeway Project has reached an important milestone with the recent opening of construction contract bids for the project’s final leg.

Road and Highway Builders’ approximately $42 million bid was named as the apparent low bid for the project. Final bid approval and contract execution will take place in future weeks, with the contract pending ultimate approval at the state transportation board’s May 11 meeting.
