Virginia City kicks off 'Christmas on the Comstock' this Saturday

Holding with tradition, Virginia City is once again putting on its festive hat for a holiday celebration with music, lights, and heaps of holiday spirit.

Saturday, December 1 kicks off the month long celebration of Christmas on the Comstock with a Santa sighting, holiday arts and crafts, a grinch-style saloon crawl, the famous parade of lights, a holiday concert, and more.

Father Christmas will be at the Virginia City Visitor’s Center at 86 S. C Street from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Join the center for a step back in time with good ol’ Father Christmas, aka jolly Saint Nick and affectionately known by children as Santa Claus. Photos are free.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the city, and Silver City as well, there will be arts and crafts galore. All proceeds support the artists and senior citizens. The three main venues are:

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., join “the Grinch Made Me Do It Saloon Crawl,” featuring specialty holiday drinks at participating Virginia City saloons. Purchase your cup in advance.

At 5 p.m., the the Parade of Lights will sweep down C Street, lighting up the town and spreading Christmas cheer along the way. Parade entires must be lit. Think you have a bright idea? Make sure to enter the parade for a chance at the cash prize.

The evening ends with the Christmas on the Comstock Concert with David John and the Comstock Cowboys at Piper’s Opera House.

The Concert begins at 7:30 p.m., and doors open at 6:30. Make sure to get there early, seating is first come first served.

In addition, the V&T’s Candy Cane Express will be up and running every Saturday and Sunday beginning Dec. 1 - Dec 16, leaving at 12 noon each day.

On the scenic 50-minute journey over the 140-year old V&T railroad route, you will enjoy hot cocoa or cider, candy canes & cookies, and sing-a-long carols on the festively decorated train.

Listen to a reading of the 1832 classic “T’was the Night Before Christmas” and watch little faces light up while riding through the enchanting Candy Cane tunnel. You may even see wild horses along the way! Whether the V&T Candy Cane Express is a new experience or one you’ve cherished over the years, it’s a magical event you and your family will never forget.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project.
